  • How A Local Golf Pro Cured My Putting?

I had only ever been an average putter by my standards. Having played off single figures for most of my life my putting never lived up to the rest of my game. I have also in particular struggled with getting the ball to the hole on longer putts of say 30 feet and over.

I played in a pro-am earlier this year and the young pro I played with said to me half way through the round. "You know when you move your putter you are taking it back too far and decelerating through to the golf ball". This had always felt comfortable to me and never realized just how bad it had become. I was always coming up short on these longer putts by about 2 to 3 feet.

I read a quote from Phil Mickelson online a few months ago. Phil said that for putting he always works on following through at least twice as far as his takeaway stroke. i.e. he takes it back 10 inches he follow throughs 20 inches. Obviously the stroke gets longer for longer putts but he maintains the same principle for all his putts.

It's such a simple movement to implement that I think can make a huge difference in all golfers putting. This has made a world of difference to my putting and I continue to get the ball to the hole on the longer distance putts. It has also helped me make a lot more of the shorter putts as well.

As a friend of mine first told me when I started playing this game ... if it's not up it's not in!

I once had a similar comment from quite a skilled playing partner but with a different rational than getting the ball to the hole. He observed a too long back stroke and commented that it allows more chance for the stroke to get off line than a shorter back stroke. Since then I have concentrated on a shorter back stroke, more like the 1:2 ratio you write about, and it has improved my putting accuracy.

Krudler. I think that's a great tip. Works well for me.
