Information on YOUR Golfing History

Hello,
I was just wondering when you guys started playing golf (how old were you.) Also, has it been a serious hobby since, or not? I started when I was 15, and since then, I try to play 25-50 times per season (Mid May-September).

-Thanks

Re: Information on YOUR Golfing History

I started this last September on a trip to Hilton Head with my in-laws (I'm 34). I was reluctant to go golfing, but my father-in-law insisted I would have a good time. Now I'm completely hooked. I hit the range at least once a week and I try to get a round in every Saturday or Sunday. Only the snow and heavy rain stop me (because the course is closed).

Re: Information on YOUR Golfing History

I started playing golf when I was 27 and started clubmaking shortly thereafter. I'm completely and totally obsessed.

Re: Information on YOUR Golfing History

I began actually playing golf in 2003 (29 yrs old), prior to this I would just hit balls at the driving range with my buddies.

A young family makes it hard to get out and play, so I range from 10-30 times a season (mid-April to October).

Last season I figured out a way to increase my practice by going to the driving range/short game area before work and then skipping lunch (fat guy so I can take it). I have kind of continued this in the winter by spending my lunches at an indoor practice facility hitting balls and working on putting.

Re: Information on YOUR Golfing History

started sept 2004 with a cr*ppy cheap set to see if i would like the game!

i used to go out in all weathers, up to my ankles in mud sometimes just to be able to go out and play!

i joined a club in april 2007 and entered as many comps as i could as well as playing bounce games. i should think by the end of my 1st year as a member i will have played around 80 games and so i have had VFM

usually spend 1 night a week at the range for a couple of hours practicing my 3skills drills
starting this year on 21.4 handicap and will be aiming to be below 15 at the end of the season.
so yes you could say i love the game!

Re: Information on YOUR Golfing History

Started playing in 2005 while I visiting my father who lived in Thailand at the time. As most know, the United States dollar will go a long way there - so I used every bit of free time (while my dad was working and when I did not have soccer tryouts to go to), to play a round of golf. I'm a natural athlete, but was still terrible from the start, but learned the game by being on the driving range and mainly websites such as GTO and Golfspan.

In 2006, I dropped my previous 18 handicap all the way down to a 5. This past season, I lost my swing and grew too self concious about what my swing looked like - and I ended up finishing as a 13 handicap. Safe to say I cannot wait till 2008 season to begin.

Re: Information on YOUR Golfing History

For me, a detailed summary of my golfing goes about like this:

Year One: played once and loved it, and then bought a membership, a set of clubs, and began to hit SOME decent shots.

Year Two: Played pretty decent, got into the high 40's a couple of times on a 9-hole and at some times could drive the ball consistently pretty straight and about 230-260 yards. I was pretty happy with my hits. I remember one hit in particular, the second shot on the second hole with my 7-wood. I had a pretty bad drive, and now was going for a big shot, just under 200 yards. When I went to hit the ball, I topped it badly. Ever since that hit, I have struggled.

Year Three: Right off the bat I was hitting bad shots. Fat, thin, right..you name it. Anyway, I just kept at it from mid-May until mid-July and from them until the end of the season (September-October) I played very few rounds. My reasoning for this, call it crazy is that I just love the game so much, and I had WAY too much going through my head as far as swing thoughts are concerned, that I needed to cool it a little and set myself up for a good year this year (2008.) I can't wait to play again and I am confident I have metally solved my golfing problems.

Re: Information on YOUR Golfing History

First hit a golf ball in 1977. Played just the one round with my Dad. Wasn't overly impressed at the time. Shot somewhere approaching 120 from memory. Tennis and basketball were my sporting loves at the time and golf just didn't "cut the mustard" for that 14 yr old.

Would next play again in 1986 whan a friend of mine asked if I would join the local club with him. I agreed and I have been playing on and off ever since.

First official playing handicap was 23, which soon went out to 25.

Today, some 20 odd years on and a couple of (life change type) "breaks" from the game later, I have got my playing handicap down to 13 and am hopeful of going lower.

My love of this game now basically stems from its "me against me" test of my own mental and physical abilities.

Oh, and the many frothies I've shared with the many new people I've met playing this game....

Cheers

Re: Information on YOUR Golfing History

I started playing in late 2002 (at age 40) with a set of Knight clubs bought at Sam's Club. For the first few months only used the 9, PW, and putter as I only played at a local pitch and putt.

Moved up from there to a 9 hole executive course and for the last few years have played a lot at a local municipal course and also play in two weekend leagues that travel all over San Diego county.

Started keeping a handicap in 2006 and it has ranged from 18 to 21 (currently 20). Still using the Knight irons but have replaced the driver and fairway woods.

Re: Information on YOUR Golfing History

I started playing in 1981 when I was 13. Played once a week.

From 1986 to 1997 I was mainly unemployed so I played nearly every day.
I joined a club in 1995, became club champion in 1997. Now I play twice a week. When I started working I used to work overtime instead of playing but now I don't miss my golf for anything !
