| 5 Wood? I am absolutely confident when I have this club in my hands and hit it around 225 carry plus roll. I have tried to hit 3 wood but not with nearly the success. I now carry driver then 5 wood as my next longest club. My teaching pro said "nobody hits a five wood anymore" when I asked him for some good brands, Should I learn to hit 19 degree hybrid instead. I have tried the hybrids but did not hit them as well as the higher lofted fairway woods. |

| Re: 5 Wood? Tell your pro, and I quote Reuben Tishkoff, "You're out of your goddamn mind." I personally carry a 5 wood. So does the FBR Open winner - JB Holmes. And I'd certainly go with a FW versus a hybrid for a sweeper vs a digger. |

| Re: 5 Wood? Your teaching pro is mistaken, or just being foolish. In fact I even see a lot 7woods in golfer's gags now days. I carry one of those square 5 woods myself. I wish I could hit it as far as you can, but I am still pretty accurate with it. The idea that "only real golfers" carry this, that or those kinds of clubs is idiotic. It makes no difference at the end of the round since the lowest score still wins. GJS |

| Re: 5 Wood? Another 5w fan here. I carry a Wilson Deep Red 5w with a stiff graphalloy shaft. It was the first of the "longer" clubs (say 5i and up) I had any success hitting, and it just stuck mentally. Now, it's my go-to club, getting me out of trouble a lot, and keeping me in with a scoring chance on par 5s when my driving sucks. I look forward to hitting it, and that confidence rubs off on the swing. I hit it a decent distance, although not 225 at all, and dead straight. I use it off the tee on short par 4s too, reducing risk and often avoiding hazards on the fairway. Definately a fave. And you can push all the hybrids you want at me ... the 5w stays!

| Re: 5 Wood? I have a 5 and 7 wood but also a 19 and 22 hybrid, I have alternated over time between the two types but have settled on the hybrids now, I find them more versatile so that I can use them well from the fairway, rough or even chipping. No problem with fairways though if that's what lights your bonfire then go for them. |

| Re: 5 Wood? Thanks everyone for the info. Now I won't feel bad about pulling out my 5 wood To clarify, I get 225 which is carry plus roll not all carry. BTW, you guys think I would see a significant distance increase by using graphite in my woods instead of steel? |

You can swing a lighter stick faster than a heavier one - but can you find the middle of the face still? |

| Re: 5 Wood? My pro told me to use the 5 wood all the time instead of the 3 wood I carry. I have done better with more consistency doing this. I still carry the 3 wood but only use it if I have a nice sitting up lie. Bri |

| Re: 5 Wood? I’ve pretty much abandoned all the fairway woods for hybrids, but if YOU get results from the 5W why shouldn’t YOU use it. As general advice for high handicappers (not the OP necessarily), the 5W is better choice than the 3W. A 3W off the tee is okay, but it’s too hard to hit on the fairway, IMO. For a VERY small sacrifice in distance (which is debatable if the 5W is more reliable) such a player would be MUCH better off with a 5W off the fairway (and IMO, even better off with a hybrid, in a lot of cases). If you can hit a fairway wood solidly and reliably, it can add up a lot of distance in your fairway game. Off the tee, I don't think the hybrid has as much advantage over a wood. However, most people have to choose between a 5W and a hybrid to stay under the 14 club limit and so they pick the hybrid as it is more versatile, to them. | Re: 5 Wood? hi hbp i think the problem with using a 3 wood of the fairway or even a driver of the fairway is having the lie to play the shot, i think many of us play a shot with woods and dont have the lie to play that shot and dont get the results we want, i think with the hybrid you have a better chance hitting off the fairway when you dont have that lie you really need for a long shot to the green. cheers bill |
