Re: Clone Drivers

hi Cliff
i do not go out to beat up me friends or fellow members i go out to enjoy a game of golf, and if i got into a mind set where i though i was trying to BEAT UP my friends i give the game up.
i enjoy seeing my friends play well and if they win then they played better.
golf is a game! its meant to be enjoyed, its to be fun, it is not about BEATING UP someone.
i have never known a golf club to stop a player playing in the weekly medal round because his clubs might not be conforming.
does your club list conforming and no-conforming clubs as it has to if it use this rule in there club games? as you stated the rules are diffrent at club level and competition level.

as you see by my list i use Ping clubs and there are no Pings on the no-conforming list but i have no problem playing with a guy who had a driver that's not on the list.
maybe you think you get a real advantage of some of the no-conforming drivers but what i have seen at our level there is little advantage if any at all.
what this thread is about is clone drivers and the R&A states that if it is not on the list then its regarded as conforming.
cheers
bill

Re: Clone Drivers

After reading all this, I'm now thinking that sooner or later (probably later) I gotta find an adequate replacement that cloned 5 wood from my bag... It's just that I hit it so well and confidently and it has never disappointed me... Well, this is certainly food for thought, fellas...

Ok you play for fun, I play for winning + the fun + the $$$

(Does your club list conforming and no-conforming clubs as it has to if it use this rule in there club games) Yes is the answer to that one.

But it is up to the individual to check if the club/driver/3 wood they are using meets the standard laid down by the R&A.

I would expect that many folks that play on the odd occasion (2-3 times a year) through the year will not even think about the rule and play on regardless. But that is not my point, it is clear though that an advantage can be gained by using non-conforming clubs, other wise the rule would not apply!

(maybe you think you get a real advantage of some of the no-conforming drivers but what i have seen at our level there is little advantage)

Now as I recall about 3 years ago the G5 came out with a + and the difference in distance was quite apparent, we have some pine trees about 3 feet tall about 220 yards out of our practice range, with the standard conforming G5 I would hit about half way up, but with the non-conforming G5+ I would fly clear over the top and land about 280 yards out. If that is not an advantage then I will be happy to use it!!

(do not go out to beat up me friends or fellow members i go out to enjoy a game of golf)

It was a term of speech that was misleading to you; it’s quite clear you play for fun that is great, and have no ambition to compete at a higher level. Sorry if you misunderstood my meaning.

Regards Cliff

(what this thread is about is clone drivers and the R&A states that if it is not on the list then its regarded as conforming) please point to the link that states this.

As far as I am aware any club to be used for the purpose of golf must be passed by the R&A or USGA.

Until it does pass. You could find that you will be disqualified from the competition.

That goes for home made putters and any club that needs to be quantified.

Re: Clone Drivers

hi cliff
if you look at the FAQ, no 11. of the R&A
Q- my driver is a copy or a clone of a popular model which is on the conforming list. the marking on my driver are slightly diffrent, but can i assume my driver is conforming and unlikely it will never be submitted.

A- in the absence of any strong evidence to show that your driver does not conform, you SHOULD CONTINUE TO USE IT in the belief that it does conform.
however due to the diffrent markings, you can't regard it as conforming on the listed clubs.

to me thats the R&A saying this guy can use his clone driver and it OK to do so but i would take it he would not try and enter into high skilled level (ie 2 to scratch) of competitions but would be fine to play his club matches.

just to tell you a bit about myself. i use to play off 4 as many on here know but i damaged my spine and had to give up golf for almost 3 years and last year i just got back playing and I'm playing off 14 and hope to get that lower this year. i have played at one time to a high standard and won and i know what it like, but i also understand golf is a game, and wining is not all its about, friendship and camaraderie play a big part in making a club and going toward the enjoyment of the game.

what make was the G5?
cheers
bill

Re: Clone Drivers

Great to hear you are playing again. I hope you continue to enjoy the game as we all do.

I had some fun early on this year, when I was playing in Feb (Table tennis District Div 1 league) this old friend of mine that was on the opposition came over to me and asked what TT bat I was using theses days, there are many types of TT bat lol.

I showed him my bamboo curl long pimple black side and a standard v5 red attacking on the other. He then smiled and said hey Cliff your bat is illegal m8, it’s was banned last year!! I was not aware of that and said what shall I do I only have this one with me tonight, he said don’t worry you play with that one and if you win I will claim the game!!

All night long I was worried about my bat and lost all 3 matches, when I arrived home I jumped onto the ITTF website to check when the ban took place.

It said that the ban of these rubbers might take place on July 2008. I then laughed and thought you little tinker (All night long I was worried about the bat, when he new the ban was/might be in July 5 months on.)

All I am saying is that me being me could not use any club that has not been passed by the R&A.

That’s just me ok

Regards Cliff

PS I will get this TT m8 of mine back haha I have a memory that never lets me down, now were did I put my hammer!

Re: Clone Drivers

hi Cliff
thanks for your good wishes and my back is holding well since i had to change my style of swinging.
I do understand what your saying and its up the the person using his clubs to see if there fit for purpose! and at the elite skill level i do agree fully with you. but i know of many player that keep there clubs for years before changing every once in a blue moon and if they have and have been used that driver for some time and then find its on the un-conforming list for 2008 then its unfair to expect them to have to fork out another large sum of money when the same thing could happen next year if there only interested in playing in the Sunday medal as most of the club players are.

there was one guy at my old club still used iron clubs with punch marks and i think the heads were from the late 50s.

The fact that the R&A recommend that most golf clubs don't post the list of conforming drivers on there notice boards it to ensure as the R&A said:- not to take clubs out the golfers bag or to put out of business the small manufacture that never put forward there clubs for inspection as they will never be used in top elite competitions.

if your looking to get into the very low handicap then what you said i think applies.
best of luck with your game this year and hope you start dropping close to scrach but the end of the year.
cheers
bill
