Cool Ball Position

Had a problem today with pushing the ball out to the right and slicing as well, after scratching my head for a few holes I had the idea what if the ball was positioned three inches forward of my left foot at address hey presto the first hit with the driver went straight up the middle and over the closing holes they were good apart from the odd one hooking to the left. Any opinions on this idea guys cheers.

Brian.

Re: Ball Position

I've found that having the ball more forward with longer clubs (woods, long irons) that I am less prone to fading/slicing. I don't know that I can explain it other than it's allowing my hands more time to square the club face.

Re: Ball Position

I place the ball in a static position for all my irons, hybrids and fairways(Please see this link). I place the ball an inch further forward for my driver.

Re: Ball Position

I like that Brian.

What about if you play the ball farther head in your stance the more open
your stance tends to be?.

Using this method it is not further ahead, you have to move your trail foot back or forward, the ball can still be forward, centre or back of stance but your stance will change.

I fully agree with your method Brian.

I was referring more to moving the ball forward past your left foot, that it can have a tendency to open your shoulders
if you address your club behind the ball..

No! Don't do that. The ball should stay around 3 inches inside your left heel for most clubs and around 2 inches for your driver.

Re: Ball Position

hi
the way Brian sets up sounds very like the way Hogan sets up in his book, " the 5 fundamentals." your left foot don't move but your right foot move in to the left and forward to open the stance a little on the short iron and are more square with the mid/long iron and a little closed with the driver. but the ball don't move it the right foot. that system does work and you always know where to set you ball.
many top pros use this system and some tweak it so it fits the way they swing but it still a fixed ball and the right foot that moved depending on the club you use. using this set up does help in keeping your posture and set up the same for most of your shots.
cheers
bill

Re: Ball Position

The object is to square the clubface up at impact. I prefer a strong grip. Therefore I must place the ball farther back in my stance. To check this, grip the club first, try your 8 iron, then take note of the center of your stance, without setting the club down; center being between the heels, not the toes. Now set the clubhead straight down in the center. If the clubface is closed or hooded, you will either snaphook or pull to the left all day with your short irons. Now, with the clubface directly behind the ball, put both feet together, still with the ball in the middle. Move your right foot out to the right about 4 inches then your left foot out a little over a foot. slightly open your left toe. Notice your hands are in the center and the club angles back to the right, clubface perfectly square. This only works with a strong grip. Weker grips are different. Hope this helps...

Re: Ball Position

That link you posted was excellent Brian and as Bill mentioned similar to what Hogan was explaining in his book regarding stance and positioning of the ball.
