good swing and shots, and still only 91!!!!

ok my swing has clicked, i make good quality shots with my bad shots not being that bad.
i still only came round in 91 on a par 71.
After all these years getting a good swing together, and taking it to the course, i suddenly realise its short game ( i knew it in the back of my small brain but you still labour on the driving range!).
On every hole i was round the green in 2 on a par 4, and 3 on a par 5.
It makes me wish from the start i had practiced my short game more and more because a 6 iron would have got me round the greens, but there you go, we live and learn.

Indeed christians,

The mantra should be "Drive for show, short game for dough". Good golf is most definately about getting the ball in the hole from under 100 yards, not how much hang time is on your drives.

Our egos are more deep-rooted than we realise!

Re: good swing and shots, and still only 91!!!!

My game is built around my 4 wedges, they are my real scoring clubs. I can use them to attack the green, play delicate chips and just as important use them to recover.

I always practice 15 to 20 minutes on the putting green prior to playing and have regular sessions on the practice pitching green and bunkers.

There is a lot to learn to develop a reliable short game and it does get left out by many or even most players.

I used to spend more time on my short game than I do at the moment. I've learned to trust my touch and it tends to see me shoot on or close to my handicap (5) more often than not.

I've accepted that I won't score any better yet until I spend 60% of my time on the short game. I'm tuning my swing right now and I'm in it for the long haul (not much longer!). I've been working on it for about 2 years solid. I know what I want, and I'm getting there. It's like I want to test my patience to the limit! I'm now beyond my limit and still going!

Average GIR is around 10 or 11 at the moment.
