6 Handicap breaking 70 or 12 Handicap breaking 80?

Who has better odds? A 6 handicap breaking 70 or a 12 handicap breaking 80? Par 72, 71 or 70 course. Does it matter? Please reply!

12 handicap breaking 80, hands down...

They just have more leway to work with, they can make more mistakes and still make par.

Re: 6 Handicap breaking 70 or 12 Handicap breaking 80?

Decent question. I have been there, done both, and have to say the 12 breaking 80 is easier of the two. Depending on the rating/slope of the courses I play, I hover around a 10+/- handicap, and break 80 about 40+% of the time. When I played at a 6, breaking 70 was much tougher. GJS

Re: 6 Handicap breaking 70 or 12 Handicap breaking 80?

For mine the odds are in favour of the 12 marker...

In order for a 12 marker to break 80 on a par 72 course, they only need to beat their handicap by 5 shots...

In order for a 6 marker to break 70 on the same par 72 course, they need to beat their handicap by 9 shots...

Cheers

no contest 12 handicapper easy. Unless you are playing three times a week you have very little chance of breaking 70. I play off 6 and play once a week at this time a year due to work commitments. My best round in the past two months has been 73 my average is 79

12 capper. Hell, as a 23 capper I've come close to breaking 80 a couple times (and I can tell you which 5 lipouts kept me from it!)

Ever so slightly off topic but a quote from a former European Tour pro I spoke to last week:

"Its as easy as it is to get from 18 to 6 as it is to get from 6 to 0"

Re: 6 Handicap breaking 70 or 12 Handicap breaking 80?

I would guess most 12 handicaps have broke 80 already. while a large % of 6's have not been 3 under could be wrong.

It would not suprise me for a 12 to go out and shoot under 80 1 out of 5-10 rounds, while a 6 would be more a 1-20 type round.

Hi, while i totally appreciate where the pro is coming from I don't think i can 100% agree. I think the difference between a 6 hc and someone off scratch is virtually all down to the short game.

Totally agree and unless you work spend lots of time on the short game you have no hope. Generally if you have a break from golf or do not practice much the first thing that goes is touch. At present i get up and down about 35 per cent of the time with no practice playing off six. I recently played in a country pro am and hit it as well as the pros i was playing with but the short games were like a scratch player versus a 10 to 15 handicapper. I figure if i can get up and down 50 per cent of the time i will play off of at least 4
