early wrist cock

I just returned from holidays and noticed very few postings; I'm not surprised but decided to contribute anyway.
Wondered if anyone has any opinions as to the merits or pitfalls of early wrist cock. I watched Chad Campbell do it and he has it down. Hogan seemed to do it also. I realize the tendency to lift the club when doing this but it seems to work great if one can avoid lifting the club because all you have to do it take the club to the top and back down without having to think about setting the wrists.

mtibt,

I'm a setter after it passes the big toe or there abouts. I teach 2 kids I call twisters. They twist the club to a cocked position on the takeaway, cocked before the clubs comes over the big toe. I had to teach them what you mentioned and not lift their entire body up, but fold the left arm into the body and rotate. They just don't feel comfortable setting later.

I guess it's a matter of comfort and fundamentals. Just my take,

GolfBald

I've never thought about wrist cock or or tried to make it happen, it happens normally for me, but I guess i'm one of the lucky ones. I've seen people who say they've been working on the wrists throughout the swing and it's lead to a lot of erratic shots. I don't know if it's correct, but I've read lots of books which explain that if you consciencously try to cock the wrists, it's very probable that you're not gripping the club correctly.

I find that i never think about cocking the wrists, a fluid motion seems to happen, hard to explain but never had a problem with it.

Setting Wrists early or late

Most "early" wrist setters do so when the club on backswing reaches right big toe. Its not something one has to "think" about once one gets the feel of how to do it. I could name dozens of pro's who do it but they don't "think" about it.
When one learns to set wrists early, all they have to do is complete the backswing whereas those who fail to do it must somewhere in the backswing, set the wrists. Not even thinking about it for amateurs means they probably aren't setting the wrists fully and therefore lack their true potential both in shot shape and in distance and accuracy.
