Question Whats in your bag?????

Hello and welcome, I laid down this challenge to a few of my friends at work a month ago. The challenge was to turn up at the chosen course with only three clubs in your bag and play a round of golf scored on stapleford. It provoked quite a lot of discussion about club choice and tactics. 5 of us played and the scores ranged from a respectable 29 up to a remarkable 42. I played to my 23 handicap scoring 36 points. I would be interested to find out if anyone else has tried this or not and what clubs you took or would take. I look forward to reading your responses about this. Regards Ian.

Re: Whats in your bag?????

I play with about 3 clubs nowadays anyway. I use 4I, 8I and putter. Can you really deviate much from this?

I do this with friends every so often. I carry a 5 wood, 7 iron, and a 52* wedge. I putt with the 5 wood. It makes for a fun game among friends, and it makes you think about your shots. GJS

Re: Whats in your bag?????

hi
i would go with a 1 iron, 5 iron, and 8 iron.
use the i iron to get me 230 yards down the fairway then I'd have a 165 yard 5 iron and 130 yard 8 iron and i would putt with the 5 iron using the bottom edge on the middle of the ball.
have used three clubs a few times when on holiday and its ease to put three clubs in the car rather than take your golf bag.
cheers
bill

Re: Whats in your bag?????

Hi and thank's for your interesting comments, I took a 3wood, 5iron and a 9iron. I ended up putting with the 3w but had to hold it happy gilmore style. It was a waste really as I only used it twice off the tee and not at all off the f/way. In retrospect a putter would have been the better choice. the challenge has made me take a long look at my game and allowed me to evaluate just how many clubs I really don't need in the bag. Once again thank you for your replies, regards Ian.

Re: Whats in your bag?????

interesting topic.

i'd probably take 5w, 8i, 56degree.... i'd putt with the 56 degree.

never really thought about it or gone out to play with 3 clubs. would make for an interesting round of golf.

Re: Whats in your bag?????

I am playing tomorrow with my nephew. Problem is my own clubs have not caught up with me. I went to Golfsmith and bought some used equipment to get by. I will be playing with a 3W, 4i, 5i, 6i, 37* chipper, and a putter. All different brands. Should be interesting.

"beast67" ; When I putt with my 5W, I use it like a belly putter.......GJS

Re: Whats in your bag?????

I have used my 3 hybrid, 8 iron and putter in these comps. My 3 hybrid is fair off the tee, can eat up a good deal of fairway and can be used to bump and run in from under 75 yards, it is also good for hitting under trees and chipping. My eight iron is a great club that I can use for a great deal of shots and makes a reasonable job out of the sand. I like to keep my putter as I can also do some Texas wedges and score better on the green than using a club for putting.

Just wanted reply on three clubs challenge, but as I can see, BrianW said everything. 3hybrid,8i and Putter will be my choice too. I did never yet went to course with three clubs only, but if we go to take a friendly round with my golf mates, very often we take just few clubs like five or seven. Especially on some hilly course, when we want to carry the bag, not care about trolley.
Btw it is good idea and we will try it sometimes
thanx martin

Re: Whats in your bag?????

We used to have a 5 iron tournament here. Two clubs, a 5 iron and a putter. I would play with my 7 fairway, 5 iron, and putter.

Re: Whats in your bag?????

Went out Friday last week with only 7I, 9I & putter and shot a 4 over 40 off the stick.

Was good fun and really forces you to think outside the box in terms of shot making...

We'll be having a 3 club event at my club later in the year.

Cheers

Re: Whats in your bag?????

Friend of mine took me once, like ten years ago, out for round of golf. He picked me up straight from the office and when we came to course I lended some six iron demo club in the pro shop and shoot 87, just with six iron. About five less then my pal, he did not speak much on the way back home, we both had eleven handicap

btw in my bag are still something I dont like, but always when I touch old tour blades, hmm they are so smooth... but Iam scare to play with, it can really hurts sometimeswants to try it soon on course, because the focus before each shot maybe give some skill for usual play, hopefully....let you know

Re: Whats in your bag?????

Hello again and my thanks to you all for your replies. On reflection and after reading your interesting comments, my club selection will be rather different next time round. I especially like the idea of using the 5 wood as a belly putter, so next time round my selection will be, 5wood, 5iron and a wedge, either my pitch or 56 degree. I look forward to hearing from you all again and once again my thanks. Ian.

Re: Whats in your bag?????

We have a 3 club competition every boxing day at my club over 10 holes. One of the clubs has to be a putter so doesn't leave you with much, I managed to win it back in 2006. I always use a driver and 7 iron.

Re: Whats in your bag?????

At my club we have a three club comp every christmas. Great fun. I carry my p/wedge, 5 iron and putter. % is good of the tee and mostly gets you up around the green in 2, or 3 on par 5. Best thing about this comp is it improves your mid iron striking and brings more creativity into the game.
