sunglasses

Hi all,just a quick question but I think it deserves some debate.I usually wear non prescription fairly cheap polarized wrap around sunglasses when playing. I broke mine half way around the course and I swear I started to time and strike the ball significantly better. I am still a novice so would like to here some opinions on this matter. A friend said he believed they affect depth perception.

My previous non-cheap sunglasses also distorted depth perception, so you are not alone. However, I don't know if all sunglasses do that.

Yep, I had the same experience - it greatly distorted my depth perception. Again, it was a pair of cheap sunglasses. It makes wonder now if these are safe for driving a car. May not be!

You’ll notice most Tour players do not wear sunglasses when they are hitting. Not all, but most.

Very perceptive and generally the case. There is one who goes against the grain. Zack Johnson wears his sunglasses when hitting and putting, when the conditions are such that there is much glare. After the Texas Valero tournament, which he won, he said he is able to read the greens better. Apparently, the high end glasses are worth it.

I had Lasiks eye surgery, and unfortunately the greens all look flat, or unless I really walk around and survey the green from different views, I get false readings such as looking down the line and an obvious uphill putt may look downhill and vice versa.

I've been thinking about getting one of those wierdo yellow tinted glasses, which some say help. I seem to recall that shade of ski goggles seemed to be very effective in flat light conditions. I also believe they are recommended for dim light driving conditions.

Thanks for your answers it definitely deserves more investigation.Professional cricketers wear them when them when fielding but not batting.Is it the same with baseball ? Perhaps someone knows what brands they wear ?

Strangely enough my wife has been shopping for a Birthday present for me and Sunglasses was the order of the day.

Adidas do a high end pair that you can clip in prescription lenses, also Oakley sunglasses can be customised to take prescription lenses.

If you look at the yahoo link in my previous post, the brand that Johnson uses is there. The majority of pro golfers wear Oakleys, and likely baseball players also. They are quality, but pricey also.

well. i'll put my hand up as the local sunglass expert on the forums. i apologise if this post goes too long. i'll try and keep it short.

my background..... i've had lazik eye surgery too. i also live in the extreme part of Central Queensland, Australia, so our sun here is as bad as anywhere on the planet.. (well almost). either way. once i had my eyes lazered i found i was extremely sensative to glare.... www.sun2shadesunglasses.com.au

For me, i've found the best golf sunglass has been the Maui Jim ( www.mauijim.com ) evolution lens in the brown colour. Such a great lens. colour perception is perfect, no distortion. they market it as all the technology in their glass lenses in something the weight of a polycarbonate. the sunnies i used before this was a pair of Spotters ( www.spotters.com.au ) in a glass lens with their penetrator lens (lightens and darkens), it's a bronze lens to look through. Australian made.... but i was always nervous wearing these on the course only because they were a glass lens and glass can shatter...

i'm not going to go into whether or not you should wear sunnies on the course or not, thats your personal option. however i'll give you my best recommendations on what to get, or look for in a pair of sunglasses if you were to buy a pair for golf...

Firstly, i would look at a good quality pair. a cheap pair will have distortion and though they still protect you from all the UV rays, they also won't last long either by scratching or breaking in your hands... do you want to buy 2 or 3 pairs of $50 sunglasses / year, or $300 now and have a pair of sunglasses that will last you well over 6 years, which is only $50 / year anyway...

In terms of the colour of the lens i will only recommend bronze or brown. if you get headaches a brown lens can exaccerbate the problem and in that case choose the bronze lens. the bronze lens had a touch of red tint which obviously gives it it's colour. Also... Get a polarized lens, something that is going to cut the glare and do the squinting for your eyes. The same thing marketed to fisherman... did you know more people drive than go fishing, this lens is now marketed more for people driving... why do you think Serengeti have changed over to more polarised lenses now than their old drivers lens which they use to market....

Moving on... don't read too much into how a company markets their top end brand over another top end brand. just like statistics, you can make results say your product is better than someone elses.
