Golf is the search for everything perfect. The perfect clubs, the perfect ball, the perfect swing, the perfect shot and the perfect game. We have all had glimpses of how good we could really be if we could consistantly reproduce those consistant chots. Unfortunately, that is the difference between 160 people in this world and the rest of us. Those 160 get paid to play this game while the rest of us pay to play in hopes we can one day play like them. It's the natural competetive instinct in each of us because the game of golf relies strictly on your own ability. No matter how good or bad the other people in your 4some are, their ability has no reflection on your score. Therefore, your improvement will show immediately. There is no one else to share the credit with if you have a good game (and no one else to blame for a bad game) - it's completely individual. Not only that, but typically your 4some is a group of buddies you get to visit with for 4 hours!
