US Open - Unfair course

I've just watched the last round of the US Open at Shinnecock Hills, and it seems to me that the course made a mockery of the game of golf. The greens are so fast and undulating that sometimes even the pros were putting off the green!

There's something wrong when half the field can't break 80.

It may be entertaining in a sadistic sort of way, but I don't think it's the way that golf is supposed to be played!

It is about time the groundsman who look after the courses at majors give us a competition. No body ever moans about the new clubs which make par 5's in to easy par 4's. In a receint European Tour match a score of around 61 was hit by a fairly low ranking competitor, isn't this making a mockery of the game as well?


The famous open at Troon a short while back was extremely hard because of the narrow fairways and wind, great stuff sorts the men out from the boys.

What difference does the actual score make anyway, the best man won on the day.

No complaints about the rough and the fairways, and if the weather is harsh then I agree it doesn't matter if the scores are high.

It's the greens that I think made the last round a lottery. Good shots were being penalised which I don't think is fair. Surely if a shot is hit onto a green and almost stops, it shouldn't then start moving and accelerate off the green!! Indeed one green had to be constantly watered to make it "playable".

I don't understand this american preoccupation with having super fast greens.

Totally agree, the course itself was set up superbly although greens turned it into a bit of a joke. I don't think that they really needed to have the greens running at such a speed, especially with the pin positions that were chosen. There would be complaints if this happened every week, but some how this seems to happen at the US Open... Well done Retief

I would be interesting if they let the greens grow to at least half inch.

You only have to watch the black and white games on the Golf Channel to see the greens were really slow.

Personally I thought the greens were a joke, us mere mortals would have lost it big time and probably snapped at least three clubs.

I played a course where on a par 3 150 yard slightly downhill you had to hit a pw landing infront of the green and the ball would still roll down to the back of the green. It was almost impossible to keep the ball on the green if it landed on the green. The greens were so fast that a tap would make that you would use to putt just 1 foot would travel 2 yards.
