Re: Starting Out Once your swing is consistent (ie you hit the ball well most of the time), different clubs will send the ball different distances, at roughly 10 yard intervals. For example, if you hit your 5 iron 150 yards, your 4 iron will go 160 yards, 3i @170, and so on. The same goes for lower clubs (6iron 140, 7i 130, etc). The bigger the number, the shorter the distance, and the higher up the ball will fly (so a 3 iron is low and long compared to a 9 iron which is short and high).

Re: Starting Out Dave, Clubs are usually standard lengh unless your unusually tall or small. What is different is: Shaft flex e.g faster the swing stiffer the shaft lie of the club e.g basically they bend the club head so it sits flat on the ground if you are tall then it is bent upright or in yours and my case its bent flat.(mine are two degrees flat (i'm 5ft 8) Loft sometimes they bend the club head to lower the ball flight or vice-versa Hope this helps Ian, P.S all the above should be done by your local pro, it is advisable to have this done asap you could be playing with the wrong clubs for you(it is usually around £30.00 to have your own set fitted for you).

Re: Starting Out Once you get a good swing. Start playing with your address. Take a 3i and setup with the ball in the center/back of the stance and see what happens. Then put it back towards your right foot and compair the change. It on the Driving Range, and in turn, hit 5 - 10 balls with each club. Look at the difference in flight, and distance. Watch the loft inpaticular. Once you know how high the ball will travel with what club, your in good sted to being able to recover from a bad lie. (under trees / shrubs. Behind mounds / mougles and hedges and so on. Finnaly. Play! Admint your gonna have a 110+ at the end of the round, but play just for the experience. Take your time and hit 2 or 3 balls from each lie (play best ball).
