Girls Golf

Hi

It has finally happened. After my increasing trips to the golf course started to take toll on the relationship, the girlfreind is going to join. So I have some questions about golf for girls.

What clothes should be worn?
Can she start with my gents clubs or are womens clubs necessary? What are the differences in the clubs?
Are there any differences necessary in the technique?
Any other general advice?

Many thanks

Richard

Re: Girls Golf

Hi Richard,

Clothes. Generally tailored shorts/trousers and a tshirt with a collar. I have included a few photos of the ladies on the LPGA tour to show what they wear.

It is best to have her start with ladies clubs. Ladies clubs are lighter than mens and also have a smaller grip size. I have seen some ladies use gents clubs but this is only if they are very tall and strong.

Technique is the same for a man and woman, deffinatley get her a set of lessons with your PGA pro and let her start on the range to learn how to hit the ball.

Other advice: If you do venture onto the course together do it when it is quiet as it can be a daunting experience if on your first game you are being watched by others, or holding up other people.

Other than that good luck.

Re: Girls Golf

Hi Richard,

Most important rule in having your wife/girlfirend golfing with you is DO NOT TRY TO TEACH HER YOURSELF. Get her signed up for lessons with a pro.

A few other reasons why women need women's clubs is the shaft flex and the club length. Like Greg said, unless she is very tall and powerful, men's clubs will be very difficult for her to use.

Another important rule is to make sure she is having fun. Don't worry about all of the rules (i.e. hitting the ball where it lies: if she is in a bunker, pull the ball back on the fairway if she can't get it out in two or three shots. If she hits into the trees, throw the ball back on to fairway, etc.) As she gets better you can start being a bit more strict on those rules.

Re: Girls Golf

I'll second the 'keep it fun and easy' tack. Learning fundamentals and growing in a serious environment is not condusive to a lifetime of enjoyment. Improve lies, don't keep score (on paper, anyway). Just hit some balls and have fun. Enjoy your time with your girlfriend... the topic of conversation is ever present on the golf course!

And the big thing is (as stated above) don't correct mistakes, just encourage the good. If she asks for advice, only tell her 1 thing you see wrong per round (or don't say anything at all. A chick asking for advice on the golf course is tantamount to the 'do I look fat in this' question. There is no safe answer. Put your head down, and hit your ball.)

Girls Golf

Thanks for the great advice guys. I got the girlfreind a set of buget ladies clubs on my visit to England last week and clothing similar to that in the pictures. Took her to the range where she managed to hit everything straight as an arrows while I spent the afternoon slicing into the trees!

Unfortunately didn't follow the advice about not teaching and, as I was standing next to her watching her shot, she hit it kind of funny so it shot off the club at a right angle and almost broke my nose.

She had a great time and will continue (with occasional pro lessons when she feels she wants them). My nose should return to normal size by the middle of next week.

Many thanks again.
