European Ryder Cup Captain

BBC website quotes Nick Faldo as stating that the PGA have not even spoken to him regarding the 2006 European Ryder Cup Captaincy

Ian Woosnam seems favourite for the post. Am I the only European that thinks this is quite possibly the worst available choice?

Im sure the American members here are still shuddering from the exploits of Captain Hal back in September, now we face exactly the same problem. Woosnam is (was?) a great player, fantastic ball striker and a tenacious competitor, but very much like Sandy Lyle, he was totally natural. He doesnt strike me as a particularly thorough individual (just remember the 2 drivers incident at the open at Lytham) capable of planning a Ryder Cup campaign with the millimetric precision of Jacklin or Langer. Neither does he possess the massive charisma and drive of Ballesteros. He does remind me of Mark James and Bernard Gallacher however, in that he will sort his team out well and let them do their job. I just worry that he wont be able to gee them up when he needs to or make insightful tactical decisions.

I will admit I had the same misgivings about Sam Torrance and I was pretty well proved wrong there.

Nobody asked me, but I think Faldo is the only logical choice followed by Monty in 2008.

As usual the PGA are fudging about, refusing to say who their main choices are. Hopefully it will all come out in the wash.

I'm just pleased that the next match is in Europe, I dont think I could have stomached much of Tom Lehman's Holy Joe roadshow which would no doubt have gotten some air time on US TV, Hurrah for the BBC!!!!!!

D.

ps I'm still laughing at that Cowboy Hat....what a buffoon....

I agree with you on this one. Woosie doesn't strike me as being an obvious pick for RC Captain. But who else is there??

Sounds rediculous I know but what about Seve again? I spoke to a friend of Seve's last Saturday and he told me Seve is still passionate about his golf alothough he can't play worth a damn anymore.

Re: European Ryder Cup Captain

I thought Welshmen stick together and there you go call Woosie an old fart!

Seve hasn't lost any of his passion, even though he has stopped playing except for the odd round here and there. According to a friend of mine who knows Seve very well, Seve knows its over.

What about somebody like Christy O'Connor Jnr? Geez, we don't have many to choose from do we!

If I was a European, I'd take the job in a heartbeat. Nothing like beating the sh1t out of the US side and their big mouths! (Sorry to the US members! No affence intended).

Re: European Ryder Cup Captain

I would LOVE to see Faldo in 2006. After '06 would like to see Seve in 2008 and Monty in 2010.
