Anyone ever seen this!!!!

Bought a R580Xd last week and took it out last night to the driving range to break it in. On about the 12th ball that I hit the club made a weird noise I looked down at the top of the head had about a 2 inch crack running up the top of the club head, no skying or anything like that. Anyone else ever had something like this happen before.

Re: Anyone ever seen this!!!!

That used to happen a lot with metal "woods". The good news is that the manufacturer will replace free of charge. Just take it back to where you purchased it along with your receipt.

I don't see it often but it does happen, especially with drivers with very thin crowns, like the TM's.

Take it back to the retailer and they'll arrange a swop for you, even if it is used. You won't have any problem.

Re: Anyone ever seen this!!!!

I have broken two drivers myself. One broke just as you described, the other driver that was broke I managed to cave the face in on it. This was back when I used to swing like an animal (125-130+mph swing speed). I have managed to slow my swing speed down to a more controlable level (about 110mph) and I haven't had a problem with clubs breaking since.

Re: Anyone ever seen this!!!!

A buddy of mine hit his drive (went OB) and cracked the hosel, pulled his backup driver, (he carries an 8* and a 10.5*) hit his next shot, and the head flew off the shaft - broken shaft.

I couldn't even lend him my driver (not that I wanted to at that point) as he's a leftie and I'm a rightie!

Just a WILD guess, but does this guy practice the 'Happy Gilmore' shot often? Clubs breaking like you described is a common outcome of 'Happy' golfing.

Re: Anyone ever seen this!!!!

Yeah, I've tried "Happy" golfing with my Cleveland 460 ... they go all over the show and not very far either.

Very disappointing.
