Advice on a new Driver?

Hi All

I am new to this forum to please go easy on me I could really use some help!!!!

I currently use a Pit Viper (Cobra Clone) 11 degree offset Driver with an FPS regular shaft which I can hit around 200 yds. I have just ordered a Turner T4 10 Degree (Taylor Made RX7 Clone) with a Stiff Irod shaft. Very typically following a trip to the range I chanced upon a Golf Pride 14 degree driver and found that it hit very well 250yds. Having just ordered this 10 degree T4 / IROD Combo I wondered if there is a downside to having a Lower degree of loft? I have purchased the T4/Irod combo having listened to the Pro in my local shop - he has recommended a Stiff shaft as my Swing speed is 100MPH - 105 - and I was under the impression that this was appropriate for a lower lofted club.

I am keen to know what you all thinks - Is there a downside to using more lofted clubs?

Two things worry me about you thread, firstly two different shaft flexes and second the offset woods you are using.........p.s why clones????


Two things you need to find out......try any American Golf for a free test.

First your swing speed....unless it exceeds 95mph then you are definatley a regular not stiff, having a stiff shaft with a slow swing speed will loose you yardage.
Second...Its highly unlikley that you will need offset clubs playing to 18, these are designed to give a slightly later hit....my opinion its c**p.

Steer away from clones, they are no where near the same quality....if it a financial burdon to buy clubs then there are plenty of cheap good clubs....Cobra and Ping have great clubs on the market for less than £250.00 if this is to dear then go for a secondhand quality club.

Loft on the club is all about launch angle for you playing to 18 I suggest you look at 10/11 degrees, high the degree more forgivness....and a regular shaft if your swing speed is below 95 mph.

You would be better trying Golfbidder.co.uk for a driver you can get a Callaway ERC II for under £100 for instance. But if your club is on the way its a bit late for that. I had a look at the I-Rod as well the driver shaft is low torque (good) and 65 grams (also good). I think you should try the regular before you settle on the stiff flex though. I think that shaft would be better for you in regular flex, giving you lots of carry and a lower spin rate.

Thanks for the advice guys - I don't want to get into a debate about Clone clubs but the truth of the matter is that there are only 5 Foundrys in the world where clubheads are made and up until now I have found my clone clubs to be comprable like for like - But hey maybe thats just me. I guess I am going to have to give the new club a go and see how I get on. My swing speed is on average around 100 -105mph so in terms of the stiff shaft I should be ok. By the sounds of the answer on this forum a 10 - 11 degree head is not a bad thing.

With your swing speed I would go with a firm shaft (in between a stiff and regular flex). A 10-11* head will be fine because the iRod shaft has a high kick point, promoting a lower flight path.

As for the clone vs. OEM discussion, we have had that debate on here many times. For the record, component heads seem to win the argument every time. The downside to clones is warrantly and they can not duplicate woods exactly (trade marks infringements) so there is usually a difference in the balancing and in some cases the material is patented as well. But if they work for you then that is excellent.

Thanks for the advice Gord - I am pleased to say that I went to the range tonight and started hitting 230yds + with a 10.5 Degree + Stiff shaft with range balls into the wind. Great advice mate thanks :-)
