What Is The Most Important Part Of The Game???

Ok, I am trying to figure out what is the most important part of the game. I am sure everyone has heard "Drive for show, putt for dough" and it got me to thinking. Maybe I need to adjust my way of thinking. To me I always want a good drive and good putting. I am averaging about 35 putts /round. I get some 1 putts and some 3 putts but mostly get 2's. But my score is still up there. So this leads to the question what is the most important part of the game?

Is it driving, Chipping, Approach shots or putting?

It's frustrating because (and this is a prime example) this happens quite often. The 300 - 350 yard holes I could smack a drive and leave it 30 - 50 yards short. Chip 3 or 4 times to get it on the green and 1 or 2 putt leaving 4 to 5 strokes within 50 yards of the green...
I'm not a pro or anything but that's not good!!!!!

Re: What Is The Most Important Part Of The Game???

Here's the stock answer:

The most important part of the game is play inside 100 yards - short pitches, chips, and putting. If it takes 3 strokes to get on (once inside 100 yards), then 2 or more putts, you're giving away strokes. From 100 yards and in, you should be working to get up and down.

you answered your own question. 3 or 4 chips, get them close and you should one or 2 putt more often

Re: What Is The Most Important Part Of The Game???

hey, I used to love hitting the c$%p out of the ball so I was 30 yards short of a green, but now I always take a more reliable first shot and have a full club into the green (100 yards or more). I started hitting more fairways, more greens and shooting less.

Chipping is of course a huge part of the game too... I find I never really have to chip from 30 yards or more, because I try to constantly leave a full club. Hope this helps!

Re: What Is The Most Important Part Of The Game???

I've always thought it depended on the person. Even looking at pros like paul mginley, monty, garcia it seems if they holed more putts they would score a TUN less. Then looking at Tiger, mickelson etc it looks like they are mircale workers around the green and make bogeys from being in the rough off the tee. And even the best putters around will miss 10 putts per round.

Obviously, you play MOST of your whole round on the golf course from 100 yards and in so that will be vital. But at the same time i personally throw all my shots away with wild tee-shots, and im very good from 100 yards and in (for a 7 handicap anyway). So for me i wana hit it straighter off the tee.

Re: What Is The Most Important Part Of The Game???

The thing that drives me crazy is... the pros make it look easy. Even John Daly, what did he score on that one hole ... 11???? Hell I can do that... LOL...

For the most part when you see golf on tv, they make it look easy, but I am learning more about golf and now when I watch golf... I don't watch golf... LOL
I watch the golfer... I watch their swing, most have the exact same swing for all shots. Some might not follow through so much closer to the hole but the for most part the pros have the same swing for every shot.

I just need to find my mojo

Re: What Is The Most Important Part Of The Game???

This is the way i look at it:

What is the club you use most in a round? Most likely the putter.

The more you use one club the more you can improve on how you use it, you use your wedges probably the next most and so on. Just a little of my reasoning

Re: What Is The Most Important Part Of The Game???

Use course management - Make sure you are a full shot into the green with your second shot on short par 4's - don't pull out driver just so you can hit a 50 - 70 tard 1/2 - 3/4 shot. Instead, hit 3W and hit a full wedge or low iron. Make sure you are thinking your way around the course...

Re: What Is The Most Important Part Of The Game???

LOL Gord ... that is why I play stupid...

I love the drive my best drive so far has been 360 yards, those 350 yard greens I want to just roll up there LOL...
The worst part is, I know should be using a less club taking a good second shot on to the green, but getting close to the green on those drives makes me play stupid.

I tried that excersise at lunch today and now I am now more frustrated than ever. I took the scorecard for my favourite course. The first hole played perfect, the second hole I was screwed on. It was 397 yards, duffed my drive went about 200 yards which left me a 197 yards on to the green. Maybe I played it stupid again. My old clubs 5 iron = 200 + yards. So that is where I started. It went 175 yards, took my 4 iron, it went 175 yards, 3 iron it went 175 yards, my 3-wood it went 175 yards. BBBAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!
There was a north wind which was a side wind today which shouldn't have affected it that much. BUT I COULDN'T get past 175 yards with any clubs. I tried 6, 7 irons and no way. Maybe I am babying the clubs, when I went to really hit it i duffed the shot hit way behind the ball. I laid all the balls on the grass and didn't want to use the tees but I think if I do it again I will. That way at least I know it's a flat lie, consistent setup and the rest is me. I swung hard, I swung soft and I still screwed it up.

ANY IDEAS ....

Re: What Is The Most Important Part Of The Game???

The range you use may use distance limiting balls. Try hitting a few clubs you know the distance with and try to see how close to the right disance you are. Also, spend some time warming up (just hitting 10 - 20 balls without even looking to see where they go before you start).

Re: What Is The Most Important Part Of The Game???

It sure sounds like limited flight balls to me.

I was at a course this weekend where their range was 150 yards. So it was great for warmup, and it's ok for club comparison (does my 35" pitching wedge go as far as my 36" gap wedge?), but garbage for distances.
