A Typical Medal

Got to the club at 9.45 for our 10.07 tee off. Loads of comotion at the 1st tee. Somebody had jumped in. Everything was running late. Some guy wanted a game and of course one of our 4 ball was late. We give up on our late playing partner and the other guy gets to play with us. We tee of 10.20.

Course rock hard and there's that devilish wind to contend with.
First hole, 3 pars and 1 bogey - so far so good.

First dust up at the second hole. One of my 4 ball over hits over the green and the ball scatters the 4 ball ahead standing on the tee. Nobody shouted "fore". I was amazed myself how much the ball bouched on. I hear one of them say "B**tards". I tell our guy to say sorry but he doesn't which leaves it to me to cool things down. All of them look huge and mean looking. (Shaved heads etc !)

Third hole - Crazy pin position. After hitting a great drive and only wedge distance away I can't see how I can hit my ball within 40 feet of the pin. I go for a huge wedge and hit the tree. 3 putts later and it's a six.

Lucky a go par, birdie, par to steady things.

The woman at the canteen serving drinks is in a strange mood. Doesn't say "hi" or smile. Nice looking as well which is a shame. I drink my coffee while the group ahead mess about for what seems like ages.

7th hole - I par but the hole takes ages with about 7 free drops taking place and alot of looking for golf balls. I've also now noticed that our new guy seems to have the habit of taking 3 to get out of bunkers and reduces it to 2 on his scorecard.

Front 9 - I finish with 36 - 7 pars , 1 birdie and 1 double.

10th hole - After a great drive, somebody shouts at the top of my golf swing, puts me off - ball goes left - another 3 putt and its another 6.

12th hole - Put off again by some clever kids shouting while I'm doing my swing. Another bogey - the round is falling apart.

14th hole - great birdie

15th hole - A ball from the group behind wanders on our green while we are putting out, My Dad says it put him off. (Quite rightly !)

16th hole - My wedge second shot rolls close - My Dad declares it lucky. He then goes on to say (Again !) that golf is all about run of the ball and luck. I don't reply - He starts getting funny and says I should "find somewhere else to live"

17th hole played in complete silence - it's the usual golf bust up - happens every round.

18th hole - the new guy hits 2 out of bounds - finishes with an 11, we spend only 2 minutes looking for a ball. The 2 ball behind us start shouting abuse at us to 'get on with it' - This 2 ball were non members and also didn't have a booking time - they sneaked on so I don't feel guilty. Walking down the 18th fairway a ball smashes into a bush about 10 yards from my Dad. I mention that someone will get hurt with balls wizzing about all around you.

I par the last to finish with a 75 (net 70), My Dad 91 (76), usual guy mentions a net 73. New guy mutters a net 82 before staggering off towards the clubhouse.

Anyway like I said "Typical Medal !"

Re: A Typical Medal

Ian

Financial reasons stop me joining any other club.

Like I mentioned in the post title, what I wrote is a typical medal. It happens every week on a Sunday. During the week I score at least 4 shots better and My Dad always says "why can't you do it in a medal ?"

My answer is that all the distractions put me off. If I played on a empty golf course with a marker (Who I didn't know ) then I'm sure my handicap would be at least 2 shots better. It's hard to concentrate on a putt when you hear someone moaning about his luck etc or people walk past you talking.

I'll post what happens next Sunday.
