Re: Greg Norman's "The Secret"

Good luck with it - interested to hear what your thoughts are. I'm a big believer in it. I find as well that you don't even have to hit balls to ingrain the feeling. I wear it around the house, taking practice swings in a mirror with my club to maintain that feel.

My girlfriend thinks I'm the saddest person she's ever met!!

Re: Greg Norman's "The Secret"

To all,

Most of you know what my opinion of "The Secret" is. In this thread I have been honest and candid about how it has helped my feel for the swing.

Let me just throw out a quick update:

About two months ago, I was hitting the worst, most ugly push slice you have ever seen. It was enough to make you Up-Chucky. I tried curing it myself, but for the life of me I couldn't get the feel back for the proper swing. The more I fretted about it the worse it got. I saw three Professionals. None could offer a root cause. None helped. It was, frankly, a waste of time and money.

I started working on it myself. I found Greg Willis's site which turned me onto "The Right Hand Drill" and ultimately to "The Secret". For me, it was like magic when I started practicing with "The Secret". The old feel started to return.

I also, had watched the AJ Truth about Golf tape. Actually, I bought them. They were a big help too.

Update in the past 4 weeks:
  • I have not hit ONE PUSH SLICE and my ball flight has been a consistant long, slight draw
  • Two weeks ago, I shot an 87 ( I have been a consistant 20 HDP until now) at one of the toughest courses I play.
  • Tonight, I shot the best round ever at my home course (an executive par 3, with one par 4 hole, 9 holes total. I play there every day. Shot a 30, where par is 28).
Instead of clouding my mind with all that gobbly-gook stuff, hip rotation, weight shift, head movement...I concentrate on hitting the nail right through the ball and make sure I maintain the "angle" that the "Secret" encourages and BINGO, another great shot.

Take it for what it's worth....

Talking Re: Greg Norman's "The Secret"

Good stuff, Chessbum

I liked the "Secret" a lot at the range today. I did notice that it was difficult to address the ball with it on -- I took many swings with the club angled back at the start -- and that I was really fighting it. I was surprised to see a) how many shots I hit went very high - I thought that breaking your wrists and "uplofting" the club is what led to that, and the "Secret" shouldn't theoretically let you do that, and b) how I could actually hit behind the ball - though much fewer swings. At the end of my bucket, I started concentrating on keeping the index finger back in the "Secret" instead of thinking about my wrist. This seemed to help against my "fighting" tendency.

I'm definitely sold on the "Secret" at least after one day. The balls I hit well had a very nice sound, flight, and divot.

Out.

Re: Greg Norman's "The Secret"

I was sitting in a waiting room yesterday and there was an old issue of Golf Digest there. The "tips" column had this creative idea: get a pancake turner, which has an angle between the handle and blade, and strap it to your right wrist, using rubber bands or whatever. You could use an elastic wrist bandage and slide the handle under that. The point is to attach it to your right wrist (if right-handed) so that the angled blade extends out over the back of your hand.

And that's it. When you address the ball, do so normally; your right hand doesn't touch the spatula blade. In your backswing, by the time your arms are up, the right wrist should be cupped and pressing against the blade of the turner. The drill then is to keep it in contact with the turner all the way through impact.

I tried it when I got home, and it's pretty interesting. For one thing, unlike Norman's gadget, it allows you to address the ball normally, without a big forward press. And it allows you to work on the timing of when you cup the wrist on the way back. But most important, it doesn't hold your wrist in the cupped position; you have to do that yourself, and you get immediate feedback because you can feel whether or not your hand is touching the turner. With Norman's "secret" the wrist is passively held; with the pancake turner you must actively hold it. Since the goal is to develop the muscle memory of *doing* this without any hardware, I think the turner is probably a better option.

And you can get one at the dollar store!

No, but I think it was Spring sometime. The cover has a picture of Nicklaus holding a driver and something about "Back to fundamentals" for the new season.

Re: Greg Norman's "The Secret"

Excellent...

After reading about "The Secret" I was trying to find something at home that I could make to get that same feeling. My hurdle points where that I didn't want anything intefereing with my grip and definetly not binding my hand to some object. THe spatula thing is briliant.. I will give it a try and report my finding.

Thanks Todd.

Re: Greg Norman's "The Secret"

I like the spatula idea. I got the Secret but haven't used it yet. I've held a club with it on, and you have to be a contortionist to address the ball. The spatula idea is really cool, and I have that issue. Thanks for that one, I really like it!

Question Re: Greg Norman's "The Secret"

Tell you what, you all have got me very interested. For some reason, the cheapest that I can find on ebay is $35 for VHS & $50 for DVD? Any other suggestions?

Re: Greg Norman's "The Secret"

Hey,

I found Todd's article about the spatula on the internet.

Here is the link if you want to read about it:

I hope that is right, for some stupid reason, I can't cut and paste an URL into this interface??

Re: Greg Norman's "The Secret"

I have worked on the theory of the secret, although i havent got the Greg norman swing aid i picked up the idea from Greg Willis web page. And i think it really is one best swing technique any golfer could use 10/10

IF YOU WANT TO IMPROVE YOU REALLY MUST BE DOING THE SECRET

Re: Greg Norman's "The Secret"

Killer,

Amen brother!!! If you are not hitting the ball and maintaining the "angle" in your right wrist that the secret promotes, you will never get past the hacker status.

It is the best golf tip I have learned this whole year, BAR NONE.
