Titleist no longer makes clubs for the average golfer

Titleist has handed over the responsibility of making clubs for the average golfer (at least irons) to Cobra. They have discontinued the 804 and given the reigns over to Cobra. I know this because I went in to buy some clubhead covers for my new 804's and they marked down the price 200 bucks...Which is a bonus because they gave me 200 bucks back! Titleist now is focusing on 6 handicappers and lower. Personally, I think this is a mistake. They better spend some serious cash on advertising the cobra name. To me, this will boost Taylormade sales as people can relate to players on the Pga tour who use Taylormade (although not the same club). Who on the PGA tour uses Cobra?
any thoughts?

An interesting idea, for sure. I'm interested to see what the pricing structure is for the low capper gear compared to their 'average joe' line.

I'd think that if I was a low capper, I wouldn't go with overpriced 'low capper' gear... if I can play that well with what I'm using, I won't need gear designed for my low handicap.

Re: Titleist no longer makes clubs for the average golfer

I agree with Lowpost42: Interesting Idea.

As I see it:

The company is designing/producing clubs for their sponsored tour pro, they can then put out an identical set available to the public. Targetted to the very low handicapper, higher price. (But when has price ever stopped the rich 20+ handicapper from buying them?) Any extra sales will help the bottom line of the company, R&D for a prototype club is probably expensive and the "pro" club is never sold (given to tour pro).

The company can then "dumb" the club down and sell a 20+ handicapper version through Cobra. You are correct advertising will be required, to convince people that they need the Cobra version. Remember Cobra already has a pretty good brand name in the driver department.

Who knows if the idea will work, but at least they are testing it out. Also if they are the first to do this and it works, then they have that little bit of a headstart on the other companies (which is just plain old good economics).

Time will tell.

Re: Titleist no longer makes clubs for the average golfer

I mean, somebody has to show some innovation. What would the world of putters be like if it wasn't for Karsten Solheim? Granted, how many guys before Karsten pitched different putter designs?

I say 'bravo' for trying the method (who knows, they may become the 'General Motors' of the golf world). How great would it be for them to have six or seven brands out there, all funnelling the cash back to Titleist? (Hmm, True Temper comes to mind).

Re: Titleist no longer makes clubs for the average golfer

it is just a bad idea.....cobra is cobra and titleist is titleist.....you dont see cobra on sundays.......The 20 handicapper can waste their money on a 690CB but they wont keep it for long....Titleist is starting to lose the golf ball market with bridgestone, callaway, maxfli, and nike...they are scared...which is likened to General Motors...Right now GM is restructuring because they are way too big...and if they lose the big truck market to the japanese they will be done. Personally, I bet Callaway and Taylormade are licking their chops.
