Doglegs and distances

This might seem like a stupid question but until today I'd never played a doglegged hole before. Anyway, I'd just like to check that the distance from the tee to the centre of the green is not literal on a dogleg and that the distance is following the centre of the fairway?

I realised this must be the case on a 350 yard par 4 dogleg right hole I played today. I hit a 3-wood and purposely tried to make it slice round the corner. I managed to get it to cut the corner quite a bit and ended up just in the first cut of rough and about 70 yards from the flag. Now I know there is no way in hell I've hit it 280 odd so that's why I'm just checking this is the norm on all courses.

Thanks and no laughing.

Re: Doglegs and distances

As far as I am aware ,distances are measured from the tee ,down the middle of the fairway to either the front or the middle of the green (depends on the course as to which part of the green).

What makes you think you haven't hit a 3 wood 280?

We all hit a lucky one sometimes (and the more you play ,the luckier you get).

Ever stop to think that maybe you are improving?

Banish the negative thoughts and watch your game soar!

BTW ,how many did you take from 70 yards?
( not being sarcastic ,I genuinly want to know ).

Re: Doglegs and distances

I chipped with a PW to a foot into the fringe but was only 15 feet from the hole to the right of it. From there I 3 putted

It just seems funny because some doglegs are probably drivable to the green if you have the guts to cut over the trees or whatever. The 1st hole yesterday was supposed to be a very short par 4 dogleg left (297 yards). I hit a perfect 5 Iron that was supposed to go just to where the bend was but a little around it. I only had about 90 yards to the flag. Which means if you went in a straight line to the flag it was easily driveable. But how would you know how far that is in a straight line?

Re: Doglegs and distances

The coarse where I play is measured down the middle of the fairway. We have a 350 yard par 4 doglegg, I can hit my through the corner and have a 30 yard pitch to the green.
