A hybrid club is a cross between an iron and a fairway wood. It is supposed to give you the accuracy of a long iron, but easy to hit like a wood.

Hybrid (n):

A better replacement for long irons. The head is weighted like an iron, yet shaped like a fairway wood. This allows the weight to be placed further back from the face and lower, helping the ball into the air faster than a traditional iron.

Another thing to consider is that when Golf magazine did tests, people hit the ball 16 yards farther, on average, than they hit it with the equivalently lofted iron. This could be a good thing, but could also create a yardage "gap" if you replace a long iron with a hybrid.

I tried a 4 hybrid today, I hit it a good 5 yards further than my 3 iron. I am going to try the 3 hybrid next week, I think I may put these clubs into my bag. My coach has put a 5 4 and 3 hybrid in his bag and he swears by them. That's why I thought I'd try them.

I'm probably not the only one who has come across this before.. Played with a friend the other day and she said using the hybrid is "like cheating"

so i guess cavity backed irons are cheating compared to blades? thats her opinion though

Yeah I think she's just echoing typical beginner sentiments. Personally I started out without the 3i and 4i as my set came straight with a 4H to replace them. I'm comfortable with my 5i, but to get further than that I would gladly whip out my 4H anytime

Please, please, PLEASE remember, folks, that the number stamped on the bottom of a club has nothing to do with how far you'll hit it. Don't grab a 4 hybrid, and expect it to replace your 4 iron. Demo it against your current irons. Your 4 hybrid may replace (like Simon's case) two clubs. Your 4 hybrid may replace an iron without a '4' stamped on it.

The best way, again, is to demo it. Barring that (like you're buying in a Canadian winter, and can't demo) is to at least get the loft of the club you want to replace measured, and buy a hybrid with the same loft.

Very good point. I don't know the loft of my 4H (it's called a 4M for whatever reason I am still not sure), but I do get at least 10-15yds more out of it than my 5i. The next club I have is a 4W, and then the driver. I'm sure there is a horrible yardage gap in my set now, but until I get really consistent with all the clubs, I can't really tell for now
