I even slice 8-irons ! I generally slice Even my eight irons end up going right – my divots point 20 degrees to the left. I assume that means I have an outside-in swing path, although I’m very Careful to set up correctly (grip, square stance etc) Can anyone help ?

Re: I even slice 8-irons ! I would agree that your explanation sounds like an outside in swing. To me the thing which most help cure it is to like the above poster said, is to have your front foot about an inch or 2 closer to the ball. and work on having your backswing and downswing follow the line of your feet. Make sure your club is square to the target and your shoulders are not open at all. Bob

Re: I even slice 8-irons ! If you setup square then I wouldnt advise taking your foot back or changing something else to counteract it. When I had the same problem, everything was high and right with divots pointing left I fixed it by looking at my swing. I had somehow developed a flying right elbow, the chicken-wing I fixed it by hitting shots with a golf ball or glove tucked under my right armpit and not letting it fall out until the end of my backswing, if even then. I started hitting the ball much more solidly and straight. Give it a go.

Re: I even slice 8-irons ! Perhaps another not so commonly talked about detail is what happens right after impact. Do you try to keep the club face going straight along the target line, try to push the club out forward instead of thinking of bring it around? Do you keep your right arm extended right after impact? I am not sure if these swing thoughts would help players avoid coming from the outside before impact?

Re: I even slice 8-irons ! Thanks all for your replies On the driving range last night I was concentrating on trying keep the club face going straight along the target line and that seemed to help slightly – as in every so often the flight was straight or slight fade, and the other times it went right or sliced – maybe I’m on the right track but need to concentrate more. I must try the glove tucked under the armpit. I think it may be time for professional help as most of the time I just seem to be practicing my slice to the point that it’s almost perfect now ! However the only other time I went to a pro he told me to concentrate on Having the club-head 45 degrees closed on impact and to try and take divots with woods – that relationship didn’t last long!

Re: I even slice 8-irons ! I used to have a similar problem which I cured by hitting half shots only. The trick is to take the club back to halfway then hold that position for a second or two, now hit down on the ball from the inside making sure that your right elbow stays attached to your right hip - this for me was a revelation, as soon as I got used to this feeling of the clubhead being slightly inside prior to hitting the ball, it became almost impossible to slice. The shorter swing also enables you to see the clubhead path and because it is a half swing it is extremely hard to throw the club outside the line (especially with a connected right elbow) You will be suprised at how far the ball goes using this method, the combination of correct club path and solid contact makes for a wonderful feeling. As you get used to this great feeling, gradually increase the length of the swing until you are making a full swing - if the slicing starts coming back, go back to the half swing until the club is on the right inside path again and the solid hitting returns. Key thought is to bring the club through from the inside - keep the right elbow close! Good Luck!

Re: I even slice 8-irons ! Thanks for all your advice, The golf ball in the arm-pit made sense to me to try and focus on and inside-out swing, however I ended up shanking a lot, so I may be doing something else wrong. One thing that did help a bit was concentrating on keeping the swing smooth, As if the ball wasn’t there and just happened to be in the way – that seemed to keep flight straight at least some of the time. I tell ya, this slice is very frustrating !

Start the takeaway with your hands moving back. Basically the one piece slow takeaway. Dont worry about the shanks, its always something silly that you havent even noticed that you have started doing. |
