Five Lessons

After reading Hogan's famous little book, it seems like all the others are mere pretenders to the crown. I have not read another golf instruction book that comes close to conveying the essentials of the game with such an economy of words. And on almost every page I found myself thinking "this guy knew what the hell he was talking about".

If you've not read this classic then you really owe to yourself to do so. What's amazing is that it was written almost 50 years ago. I can't believe I waited so long before reading it.

I have had mine for about 12 years and still go back and read it when i am struggling with my game. I first learnt how to swing a club from a guy who taught himself from this book and my friends refer to it as the bible.

I too, think it is one of the best golf books ever written. There are however a couple of caveats to keep in mind.

Hogan, through his career, was always fighting a severe hook. Some of his advice in the book is things he learned to keep the hook influence from overtaking his game. His emphasis on the really strong grip and his advice on practicing with the right thumb and index finger removed from the club shaft conciously or subconciously are designed in part to reduce hooking tendencies.

I only mention this because I was surprised to hear this. Remember, the book is over 50 years old. It's just something to keep in mind.

I just took this book out from the library (remember those?) and I have to agree it is a good book. One that I will certainly buy. I found the illustrations excellent as well and very clearly explain most elements of a sound swing. I'd give it a 5/5! (see below).

That said about a very old golf book -- there are so many golf books out there, some are pure shite and some are actually very good. Which book do YOU recommend?
