Distances with clubs

Just want a quick rough idea what you would expect the distances to be with these clubs, if say one can hit the 5i 170yds.

9W :
7W :
3W :
Driver :

I'm wondering if the 9W or 7W are redundant?

Re: Distances with clubs

Thanks Peter. As I suspected, it shows about the same distance for the 3i and 5W. Guess I don't really need to look into adding a 5W, 7W or 9W to my bag

Re: Distances with clubs

Hi Simon,

It breaks down into the functions of loft and length.

As a rule, a modern 1 iron and 3 wood are both 15º. A 2 iron and 5 wood are 17º, a 3 iron and 7 wood are 19º. I've got a buddy who's thinking of replacing his 3 wood with a hybrid 1 iron. Same loft, a little shorter (compared to the 3 wood), but more controllable.

The chart that peter3 gave is a not bad indicator, but like anything static, it's just a starting point.

Re: Distances with clubs

That's for that insight Lowpost! So going along that line, a person would probably get a 9 wood if he can't hit the 4 iron very well?

Keep practicing.... if you can't use a 4i, and just stop using it for another club, you'll never be able to hit it.

Re: Distances with clubs

Actually, I would suggest going the hybrid route - smaller and heavier than a fairway wood, making it more versatile. Checking the loft is a great starting point, and length makes another (small) contribution to the yardage you'll hit a club.

I swapped my 7 wood for a 20 degree 3H Heavenwood today... All I wanted to do was have a look at, and to test one... I didn't realise just how easy it is to hit with these things!

I also ended up trading in my Callaway Big Bertha Titanium (11 degrees - Regular Graphite) for a King Cobra SZ (10.5 degrees - Regular Graphite).... all I can say is WOW. The cobra actually launches quite high for a 10.5, and it's so easy to hit with.

Hoping that these two clubs will shave 4 shots off my game next time I play, but we'll see!

I think it is... The thing is, I'm not planning any competitions this year (except against my friends to embarass them!)

I've been having driver problems, and this club (even though I only got it today) has already added to my confidence!

Re: Distances with clubs

Oh yeah that's something I forgot to include in my previous post - in addition to the irons and woods, you can now actually choose a hybrid instead. So in terms of intended yardage, you would kinda have a choice say between a 3i, a 7W and a 3H, right? So I guess the other considerations would be 1) how easy you find to hit each type of club, 2) how much you can work each type of club, 3) how each type of club can be used on different lies and surfaces... Anything else?
