3 Iron ='s which Hybird....

I have Wilson Fat Shaft Hybirds in a 5 and 7 wood (these clubs are awesome) and I am looking for a 3 wood hybird to complete my set. I assumed that a 3 wood Hybird would be equivalent to a 3 iron. While reading a golf book today - they compared a 7 wood to a 3 iron, since they hit an equivalent distance..... this leaves me a little perplexed - since my 5 wood hybird goes further than my 7 wood - I assume the 3 wood goes even further - which iron would the 3 wood hybird be equivalent to, if any…

Thanks,

James

Hi James,

Get the lofts checked. And the lengths checked.

Then see someone who knows about these things (clubfitter) to get them to assemble your next hybrid so that it fits the yardage gap.

Re: 3 Iron ='s which Hybird....

LowPost has it right James, all these types of club hit different distances and heights.
Hybrids generally have the same length shaft as a fairway wood (some on the other hand use a special iron shaft).
I have Nike rescue 18 and 21 deg. loft, but feel the shafts are too long. I now only carry six iron through to wedges, but would be much happier if the hybrid/rescue were more like a long iron length.
This season I may use the six and seven Orlimar irons, and seven to sand wedge Mizuno blades which I have had for years. I will have to match all the grips exactly, and may have to add weight to the back of the blades.
Golf is an area where you have to know your distances and as LowPost says, not have any gaps.

Andy - there's nothing wrong with cutting down your Nike's to your liking.

Re: 3 Iron ='s which Hybird....

I know that LowPost, but the last time I tried asking a Pro to do that, I felt they thought I didn't know what I was talking about.
As far as I'm concerned, if I want a stiffer, shorter club with a midsize grip, with two extra wraps, then as long as I pay them for it - what's the big deal?
I think that over there in the States, you are far more chilled out about ordinary golfers asking for alterations.
I was looking at the new Ping G5 hybrids the other day, and the assistant, who didn't know me or how I played asked me if I wanted some help. I asked if they could get the Ping in a firm shaft with a midsize grip. Without asking me my handicap, he says that if I have that spec. then I will be losing distance and slicing.
Result - one lost sale, I will pick them up on E Bay sometime.
I may start doing my own club alterations, especially as the advice given on here is so good.
Now, where is that hacksaw?

Re: 3 Iron ='s which Hybird....

Hi James,

From my own understanding, yes the 3H should be close to the 3i. What you seemed to be referring to is the pure 3W, which is definitely further than the 3i (or the 3H), and the 7W would be more comparable to a 3i (and I think that's what you read in the book). My own set of clubs comes with one that is labelled M4, and I believe that is a hybrid which is in between a 3i and a 4i (and so I assume the M refers to 'mid').

It could be just a matter of terminology, and while nothing compares to actually looking at the loft, my understanding of the terms above does make it clearer for me to know what to expect in general from the different club names..
