A funny thing happened on the way down...

I've just finished reading Sam Torrances excellent autobiography and I noted a couple of things consistent with a lot of similar books by other golfing stars.

They all moan about the one that got away, Torrances is The Open, Palmers is the USPGA same with Watson, Snead the US Open as is Faldos and Nicklaus' is not winning a FIFTH US Open to hold the record alone.

Now I know these are all driven individuals but surely if youre Sam Torrance for example, and just before popping you down for your turn at the table, your creator said to you;

'Ok then, theres this game they invented, youre going to be remarkably good at it and win x,y and z enough money to keep you for a long time and you will go down in the books as one of the best Ryder Cup pariticipants ever, but you will never win the oldest most important tournament'

Now call me easily satisfied but I would sign on the dotted line right there. Theres something strange in the human psyche at work here I think. Anyone else happen to agree here, and what other 'underachievers' can you think of, Gary Player for not making double figures in Majors perhaps???

Just hand me a pen . Id love to play any sport proffesionaly, imagine your office being a golf course or a tennis court, itd be one of the best experiences ever. As for under achievers,Sergio Garcia comes too mind, he is ranked number 6 in the world but looking at his carreer as a junior (I think his handicap was -4??), so far he is definatley an under achiever.

where do i sign mizunoman!

id take that option every day of the week!
the mentality of most professional sportsman is to strive to reach the pinnacle of their chosen sport and that means winning "THE BIG ONE".
i guess monty would write the same thing if he never bags a major but look at his golfing career hes a superb golfer,but unfortunately forever saddled with the tag gf a great player never to win a major.
sport is littered with "one that got away" stories.
