soft tip shafts versus stiff

can someone explain the difference between soft tips, mid tips, and stiff tips.

I believe my ball is blocking right because i have a soft tip shaft
(club is lagging behind the swing). I am hitting the ball on the center of the head.

I think i need a stiffer tip....I am going to go to a club fitter to get fitted but like to know what is going on in the processes. Can someone help me understand this plus the benifits and negatives

Re: soft tip shafts versus stiff

It's pretty simple actually ... if you are blocking it right then you actually need a softer flex, not a change in tip. This is why:

Graphite shafts are a certain flex like: regular, active, stiff, x-stiff and then to bridge the gap between them they started to develop different flexes in the tip area of the club.

So you now can get regular flex with soft tip, mid tip or stiff tip - it's like a flex within a flex. A soft tip bends a little more than a mid and the mid bends a little more than stiff. The tip is a minor change used to custom fit launch angle and not really ball flight.

I hope this helps you.

Re: soft tip shafts versus stiff

i was told that when i swing the club face is lagging behind the shaft. By tipping it it would bring the club head more in line with the shaft at impact.
maybe i am not explaining it right?

Re: soft tip shafts versus stiff

Imagine the club head at the end of a really soft shaft. A shaft as soft as spaghetti. The club head is attached at the hosel and most of the weight of the head is away from the hosel towards the toe and skirt of the club head.

So in this example of the extemely soft shaft, hanging stright down, the head will sag with the back of the club head and the toe of the club head farther down relative to the hosel.

This means the club face is more lofted and open to the target line as the club is swung. When you swing the club the centifugal force acts on the clubhead to make it bend just like the noodle shaft in the example above.
