I would add to this that you can't have a sweeping motion swing unless you have hips open, straight left arm, and inside out swing at impact. Big face on the drive combined with no fat shots due to the tee, allows more serious errors in the impact zone to happen with a driver over a fairway wood.
Therefore, if you have swing errors at impact, generally they will be much worse with longer
clubs or iron on the fairway (vs short
irons) due to the fact that these longer
clubs are a longer lever, and non-correct impacts generally are highly dependant on wrist angle and/or armangles. (If you are holding onto a short stick, the end goes up a lot less with the same wrist motion vs the end going up a lot more with a long stick with the same wrist action.)
Thus, this is why pros can hit the long stuff.
