Wie twists my screws

Michelle Wie plays on the lpga and the pga? Me as a man can I play an lpga event? Or is it time to just do away with the lpga? I guess the thing that twists my screws about Wie is that she is taking the place of someone with no option to play in the other lpga events.

This has been debated in other threads if I remember. And there is no correct answer, only opinion.

Mine being that it is perfectly acceptable to have anyone play on the PGA "Professional Golfers Association", it does not say "Men's Professional Golfers Association". The LPGA does say "Ladies", so there you go. The titles say it all.

Re: Wie twists my screws

Hi monkey
It's a true but sometimes sad fact that in pro golf sponsorship dictactes.

Women Guesting on the mens pro tour results solely from the request of sponsors.

regards. Terry

Re: Wie twists my screws

Monkey got me thinking...

What if an ape, a really big one. Talanted as all get out was able to be taught to hit a ball. Learned the game to the point where he could compete at a professional level...far fetched yes, but for the sake of argument here, would this ever be a consideration in the PGA. I wonder if there is really a "human" clause in the rules?

Re: Wie twists my screws

No human clause that I'm aware of, but I guarantee that if an ape played on the PGA Tour, it wouldn't be long before the USGA changed the equipment regulations to make it harder for the ape.

Haha an ape that smokes, drinks and swears to top that off? :P

What if an 8 year old boy (yes normal boy) can play so well, can he play in the PGA tour?

Ty Tryon made it past Q. He was 17. They let him play a round or 2, then held his card until 18. But now I think he is injured. So we wait. He played on the Nationwide for a while.

I thought he just played in some Korean Tournament that Wie played in? I'm pretty sure after 2 rounds he was tied for like 115th...

Re: Wie twists my screws

To me it seems that most of the PGA tour pros who have gone public (Vijay, Retief et al) biggest complaint is giving her a sponsors exemption. I do not think any of them have a problem if she earns her way into events. But when you have a limited number of places and guys with tour cards or better golfers getting bumbed from tournaments, struggling to get in tournements and feeding their families, then here she is with other options to play and earn money and realistically at best is only hoping to make the cut being given exemptions after all when given several of these exemptions she has not even won a LPGA event.

If she qualifies for either open then she earned her spot or if she goes to Q school and gets a card then she earned her spot and I doubt you here any complaints from the majority of the pros.

Re: Wie twists my screws

Well, news guys. She just made the first qualifer for the US open. Won it. So, it is looking like she is earning it. Also the first female making the cut in a men's tounament makes her the real deal.

Twist those screws!

Re: Wie twists my screws

All good points fellas,

Terry you took my thunder with your comments about Long John as I reckon there would be a few apes already playing on tour (men and women).

I don't think that a female should be given an exemption and take the place of another pro to play in a man's event.

However, as Greg says, if it is earned then all good and well.

If a male pro was to play on the LPGA tour (I think that there already is after having an operation!) there would be no contest. The man would win for the simple reason he is a bigger hitter (remember I'm referring to golf pro's). The only benefit I can see is it may help get more sponsorship for the ladies tour.

Re: Wie twists my screws

I kind of agree with Micheal Campbell here and good on him (and Vijay) for saying it. Seems if you make a comment against Wie the US press come down on you like a ton of bricks

He ostenisbly said she said concentrate on doing well on the LPGA before she starts trying to play the PGA or other mens events. How many LPGA events has she won? How many majors has she won?

I personally think she is being blatantly exploited by her sponsors. One of the great things about Tiger was his wish to play and dominate the amateuer arena before getting his card. He wanted to earn his stripes before mixing it on tour. I think Michelle should do the same. She's got some real good competition from the likes of Pressel, Creamer, Ochoa and the Korean girls and i'd like to see her regularly beating them before she takes on the men. She will pretty soon have little support from players on either the LPGA or PGA if she carries on taking sponsors exemptions IMO
