How would you play this?

10 yards short of the green with a front pin placement. Ball lands in the rough but sitting up a bit. Need to land on the front edge of the green and let it release to the pin. I tried a 60 degree wedge - the club goes right under the ball and goes about 3 yards. How would you play this??

Re: How would you play this?

swallow my pride and make sure that first and foremost I take the big number out of play. I would rather be putting from 25 feet for par, then chipping again or hitting from a bunker. even if I was going at the pin I would use a sand wedge, maybe play a flop shot

Re: How would you play this?

1) choke up
2) dont ground club
3) play with a more sweeping shot, like you would a driver

Re: How would you play this?

I found that a 60 deg wedge was too demanding of perfection for me at my level (90's). I would either go right under it or skull it. Switched to a 58 deg (TM) for my lob work and found if I choke up like Greg says, I can get the same short little pop-ups and it feels like I have much better control, or at least a better chance of making face contact.

Re: How would you play this?

thanks guys, this comes up a fair amount as I play at Bethpage golf course. If the ball doesn't sit up it is buried in the rough off the green. The way the grass grows around here the ruff is very thick. That is in part what killed the pro at the US open on the Black course - to boot is was raining - so thick wet ruff.

Re: How would you play this?

Hi michael,

I would hit a pitching wedge to bump it through the rough a bit,

I agree with Greg and Greeboman on choking up on the club

Re: How would you play this?

take a sandwedge, setup with the your hands a tad behind the ball and make a fairly big sweeping swing with no wrist hinge, works in my yard in my thick grass, my course doesnt have much thick thick rough
