HOW TO SHOOT IN THE LOW 80,s

Hi folks
I wander if the majority of people realise, that if you can hit a ball reasonable straight for 150 yards, there is no reason why you can't par most par 3's, par or bogey most par 4's and par or bogey most par 5,s. just by using a 7 iron ,PW, SW( for bunkers ) and a putter. If you can produce similar scores as above it is a possibility that you will be shooting in the low 80,s.

You can even add a rescue club fro the longer par 3,s.

Most Mid- high handicappers ruin their chances of posting reasonable scores becuase they are brainwashed into believing that a big booming drive is essential to low scoring. If the truth be known, most high handicappers fail to hit their driver further than their 8 or 7 iron and are far less accurate with their driver than their mid-irons. I play off 1 h/cap and i haven't hit a driver in years.

If you want to shoot in the 80,s you have to hit more fairways.

Why not try a round using just the five clubs that i mentioned above and let me know how you got on .

I think hitting fairways is part of it, but you still have to get up and down 1/2 of the time if you are on or near the green in regulation and/or 2 putt most of the time to shoot in the low eighties.

Re: HOW TO SHOOT IN THE LOW 80,s

MY local course is a par 72 with:
4 par 3's.
10 par 4's
4 par 5,s
Now if you par all par 3's and bogey the remainder, that would still give you a score of 86.

EXAMPLE.
Hole 1 par 4 397 yards.
shot 1 : 7 iron 150yrds
shot 2 : 7 iron 150 yrds
shot 3 : PW 97 yrds
Followed by 1 or 2 putts .

Re: HOW TO SHOOT IN THE LOW 80,s

Hi slats.
it is possible that you could hit a couple of double bogey's , but you could also hit a couple of pars which will cancel out the double bogey's.

Try it tomorrow slats...prove my point and there will be a couple of drinks in it for you...cheers mate

hi andy
would using a 3wood instead of a rescue detract from the object of the experiment?

Re: HOW TO SHOOT IN THE LOW 80,s

HI mate.
only use the 3 wood on the longer par 3's. Don't be tempted to use it on par 4's or par 5's unless you can hit it down the middle.

good luck mate.

Re: HOW TO SHOOT IN THE LOW 80,s

If you are not hitting the fairways after the frist couple of holes, leave it in the bag and tee off with your 7 iron. you will be suprised at the low score you post.

good luck mate

Re: HOW TO SHOOT IN THE LOW 80,s

not for me, golf is a sport for me not a mathmatical calculation, i want to boom it past my mates, they want to boom it past me, i want to heat that sound as the ball explodes off the middle of my driver and watch as the ball fires right down the middle,

yeh i know i,m a mug because i lose balls and will pay for the pleasure of a good shot by hunting through the rough when i,ve hit a not so good one but thats a price i,m willing to pay.

im the idiot that thinks i can carry the lake 250 yards away gaurding the green, but im having fun and sometimes i can do it man.

Re: HOW TO SHOOT IN THE LOW 80,s

Absolutely correct, my coach years ago use to make me do this very thing. Another thing he use to do to, to force or point out the importance of short game was to make me use a putter from 10 feet on in to the green, I soon realized in most cases my worst putt was better then my best chip, which forced a lot of chipping practice to get better, but even today I putt from off the green if at all possible, and when I do chip, I get the ball on the ground on the green as fast as I can, and get the ball rolling like a putt. All that checking and spinning chips and pitches look pretty, but if you want to lower your score, you need to get over that and start doing what works...This also applies to every aspect of the game, stop trying to look pretty and start doing what works, it is called playing within yourself. Had Phil followed this adage, he would be the 2006 U S Open Champ., so even pros get caught up in the looking pretty thing as oppsed to doing what works. Phil could have hit an iron off the 18th tee, and I gurantee you he would have par'ed that hole. A lesson for us all.
