Right Hand Drill?

Recently I had a lesson with my local pro (Syd, Aust) I had just purchased the new King Cobra SS clubs in reg graphite.

I have been under distance with my irons, particularly mid 4-6. He had me working on a drill similar to the right hand drill as seen on this sight. Trapping the ball, hitting down and through taking divot after ball contact.

I have tried to practice the right-hand drill but find to get the wrist angle in the photo(right) the face of my seven iron is virtally upright like a 2 iron and aligned with my back foot. The shots are quite erratic and I tend to swat.

What should my thought be thoughtout this drill ? Can you give any other tips in this regard??

If the face is shut down with this setup, then I suspect you have it:

1) Too far back in the stance (like you mentioned). The ball position does not change. You play a 7i in the middle, and a Driver in the font foot.

2) Your hands on the club probably need adjusting. The picture is just to let you see the right hand position. If you only change that, then you might be using an old grip that is causing the shut face. You want the left hand palm and right hand palm on top of the club. This puts the club more in the fingers. Need to adjust the club alignment as well to get the face square.

3) There is a good possibly that it "looks" shut to you because in a bad grip / hand position, the face looked normal. But now changing it to a proper setup, it will look different to you and more shut. This is normal. So be patient with change and you will see good results that will start to look normal again.

I'm still a little unsure of the closed club face, but will continue with the practice and the drill. I tend to hit "fat" when I play since working this area, hopefully in time this will sort itself out.

Finally is there any good drills to improve rhythm and timing?

There is one that I use for putting, but can be adapted for the full swing using a Metronome.

Set the tempo rating to 120. That is 1 tick per 1/2 second. Then start swinging without listining to the ticks...just go through your regular setup and shots. Do this for about 10-15 balls.

You will naturally have listened to the beats and will have a good idea if you need to speed up or slow down the tempo. So, make a guess at the next speed you want to set it at. What you are looking for is to have the start of the swing to the top be 2 ticks, and then have impact be the third tick.

The putting drill is with 1 tick back and one tick through.

Don't play with this metronome for more then 20 balls. You have to turn it off for 2x more times then you practiced with it. Otherwise you get too acostomed to it and that is all you think about. You have to be able to train you head to have it's own clock. Your optium clock is not always a perfect ratio of ticks, it could really be 1.657943 to 1 and not the 2 to 1 in this drill. But what this will allow you to do is know if you are ahead in the count on the takeaway or slow on it. That is really where tempo is lost, on the takeaway. You get really slow and then jerk from the top, or you take it back fast and have to decelerate through. You want a simple, uniform and repeatable tempo each time.
