Swing speed

At the range this evening, i was practicing mid irons, which are usually difficult for me(mentally). Whereas my wedges and 9,8,7, I can strike as well as I could wish for. I took the notion of striking the mid irons as if they were wedges and the difference was amazing. I came to the conclusion that the swing speed of my wedges etc was slower than the mid irons. Conclusion being that the swing speed is the key not the effort of the strike. I think this may make some sense

Re: Swing speed

What you meant was your tempo and rythum was exactly the same as the wedges?? Because you would naturally create more SWING SPEED with the mid irons even if it felt like you didnt because LONGER SHAFTS, BIGGER ARC MORE SWING SPEED.

Good work.

Re: Swing speed

There's a gent by the name of David Lake who is in a position to run some interesting tests. David owns and operates 1irongolf.com. The premise is that all clubs are built to the same length. Your 3 iron is the same length as your PW.

He ran a test where he ground off the numbers on the sole of a set of clubs. He then proceeded to get different golfers to hit different clubs. Obviously David knew what clubs were which - but he would tell the golfer what the club was. Sometimes he was telling the truth, and sometimes he was lying. The results, however, were consistent. The lower the loft, the faster the swing speed. Please remember, each club was exactly the same length.

The moral of the story, as Robert has discovered, is that clubs are lofted for a reason. That reason is to generate distance gaps. You don't have to swing a long iron harder to make it go farther - but try telling that to your subconcious.

I could start a whole thread about club design... like why there's a 1/2" step between clubs, why 'D0' and 'C8' are the 'standard' swingweights, why graphite shafted clubs are longer than steel shafted... Golf is a funny, funny sport - both in the world of equipment, and the world of playing.

Keep on using that tempo, Robert. I think you've discovered a 'secret'.

A new highlight: Golfing the home course on Christmas Day.

I say it too often: If it's golf club shaped, you can play with it.

For the record, I'm a club doctor, not a swing doctor.

Could I ask you to please do? I'd like to understand all that myself.
