| aftfords theory works! hi folks i have been using aftfords approach to lower scoring albeit by altering which clubs to carry. at his request i played my round today by the book using only 7i,pw,sw and putter. it seems daunting at first no distance clubs to hit and you get some strange looks teeing off on a par 5 with your 7i! scored 45 on front 9 due in the main to abysmal putting!back 9 scored 39 (putting improved) so in the end carded 84. in summary played from the fairway never hit rough or bunkers and played the same ball all the way round. you definately have to think your way round the course and improvise your shots. so andy it works ![]()

avg with 7i is about 165, used sw on most holes for chipping and at a rough guestimate 32,33 putts |

you are spot on! used the clubs andy mentioned but next time im going to swop the 7i for a 5i. if you only take out the clubs you can depend on then your scores will come down because they are accurate. remembered the post about looking at hole when putting late on in the round if id have started the round with it could have broke 80. one putted the last few holes its unreal that it actually works ![]() |

| Re: aftfords theory works! 165 yards for a 7 iron is quite a poke for me. In fact that is about my distance with a 5 iron. I tried Aftfords tip and had a 50 on the front nine. Not good for me (I am a 20 handicap). I had a lot of putts though, that probably killed my score. With only 32, 33 putts you were putting lights out too. I am thinking of trying it but using my hybrid club for my longest club. I can hit it about 190 yards. Then 5 iron or less the rest of the time. My goal would to be IN THE FAIRWAY all the time. What do you think? Thanks for the additional information. Chessbum... |

the thread was to show that you dont need 14 clubs to play a round. i used the 4 clubs to reinforce andys theory. one thing it has done it has made me think more about course management and improved my shot making. from now on im going to play with 3wood,rescue,5-9i,pw,sw and putter because the are my dependable clubs that i know i can hit accurately. so go ahead and use your hybrid and see how you get on its great playing off the short stuff! ![]() |

| Re: aftfords theory works! I've posted it before, but I'll post it again. Our club is a little 9 holer built into a slope - so we've got 6 holes 'down the hill' and 3 on top. So last fall I'd often take my 1 year old out in the stroller, and take 6-8-PW or 7-9-GW and play the top 3 (which are a par 5 (450 yards), par 4 (340 yards), and par 3 (150 yards)). Hitting about 150 with my 6/7, I could often play these holes at 1 over (par, bogey, par), and occasionally play at even par (scrambling the first two holes). The real challenge is putting with the wedge to get down in 2. ![]() I have yet to take it to the course.

| Re: aftfords theory works! A follow-up to all... Today I played 18 holes and the clubs I used were as described earlier in this thread, namely 20 degree hybrid, 5,6,7,8,9, PW, putter. I had tried it once before but minus the hybrid club. Well, I shot my best round this season, a 91. I am a 20 handicap through and through so that was pretty good. This includes a BIRDIE on a 468 par 5 using hybrid, 9-iron and 6-iron (I had just went off the fairway and blocked by a tree and chose to hit a high 9-iron back in the middle of the fairway, instead of some dumb "go for it" shot). Never pulled the driver one time. There's my story... Chessbum... |
