no using a driver

hi all
i have a short 9 hole par 33. 2057 yard course near me and that i play alot. i always used my driver 5 time in the 9 holes, having read some of things aftford has said about using 5 irons to drive, i thought i'd try not using a driver. this is how it went.
1st = 126 yds = 8 iron then wedge then 2 putt = 4 1 over.
2nd = 273 yds = 5 iron then wedge then 2 putt = 4 par.
3rd = 109 yds = wedge then 2 putt = 3 par.
4th = 415 yds = driver then 7 iron then wedge then 2 puts = 5 par.
5th = 330 yds = 1 iron then 8 iron then 1 putt = 3 1 under.
6th = 121 yds = 9 iron then 2 putt = 3 par.
7th = 308 yds = 3 iron wedge 1 putt =3 1 under
8th = 104 yds = wedge then 2 putts = 3 par
9th = 271 yds = 5 iron then wedge then 2 putts =4 par
score = 32 on a par 33 on a windy day, wish i had not used the driver on the 4th as it was only time i missed the fairway and had to hack out thick rough.
next time i play there i wont take my driver with me. its a short course but great for learning not to play ever long shot with a driver.
you should try not using your driver, its the best score i have made there by 4.
have fun
bill

Re: no using a driver

Tru, but this will only work on a short course... i play a course at 7000 yards, you have to hit driver to score low else you can't reach the green.

Also on the 'not using driver' point, I feel that this could help people to get to 10 - 18 over, but I think that if you want to get lower than that you have to use driver more. Driver should be swung no different than your pitching wedge...

Re: no using a driver

hi richie
i use to think that too and i do play a 7000 yds course and a few 6400 too
even on them there is only 3/4 holes i cant reach without a driver, if you use a 3/4 iron i bet most you could hit with 5/6 on second.

Tru but i feel if I am hitting wedge, 9 or 8 into a green i'll get more birdies than with a 5 or 6 iron

Well done Bill that is an excellent score, but what impressed me most was , you decided on your plan and you stuck to it. great lesson in course management Bill.

Cheers mate

Hi richie.
At my local course there is a 518 par five and a 540 yard par 5 and i reach the green every time in 2 shots and i haven't used a driver in 8 years.
Even if i fail to reach them in 2 shots , i always manage a par at least.

aft.

Re: no using a driver

hi aftfore
what it made me do most not using a driver was to think about where i wanted the ball on the fairway and knowing it would end up close to where i wanted and second thing was i had already had my second shot plannedbe fore i hit my first, i also aimed for middle of green or towards the high safe side so i was putting.
thank aftford for it was your idea's i was using.
bill
