Course Maintenance

Does anybody else's green keepers plug the greens during the season?

Got to league yesterday and all the greens had been plugged. The greens were plugged in April or May last time. It's just irritating, yesterday was the last week of league and we had to putt on this obstacle course. I had a 2 foot putt that moved 8 inches to the left. Normally it would of been a straight putt but caught several holes that just kept pushing it left.

Re: Course Maintenance

hi
we have an inland course thats on the side of a hill and they have to do the and its about same times of year as yours, we get told it for drainge and to help the greens through the winter. i play links most of time and there greens seem to take the elements better. the oldest course in the world, musselburgh is played on the same 9 greens year in year out. st andrews is one of the most played courses in the world with greens the size of football pitches and i dont know of them plugging the greens.

Re: Course Maintenance

They just core aerated the entire course, right after club champ. (In fact, as I was coming in off my back 9, I saw them coring the practice green).

I concur that it's tough to putt over the holes - so I usually take a 'general break', and play it, knowing that it's more like Plinko than putting.

Re: Course Maintenance

They are doing it my home course aswell. They say it'll take a few days too straighten out, but this springit took a month too get the greens back too normal. I was told other courses sand the greens after aerating them which makes them playable alot faster.

Re: Course Maintenance

Yes Dan,

Core and sand them. I know of many courses that do this. It's just a matter of when they do it.

It is frustrating but bare in mind two things, the greens will be better for it and everyone has to putt in the same circumstances.
