who will woosie pick?

Hi Guys,

With the ryder cup fast approaching, who do you think will get the wild card entries from woosnam? I suppose Darren Clarke has to play if he is ready, but who will be the other pick? I think Paul Mcginley is a big possibility. He has a great Ryder Cup history.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: who will woosie pick?

I think Woosie has got to pick Darren Clarke as you said. As for the other spot, Jiminez is looking in danger of not getting an automatic pick so he could be a possibility for a wildcard along with Ian Poulter who is also a fair way back on the qualifying list. Paul Mcginley as you mentioned is another one.

Re: who will woosie pick?

I don't think Clarke would accept, but surely he deserves a wild card.

Mcginley looks to be in on points, so ...

Bjørn and Jimenez? Both have been sketchy lately, but are massively experienced and have decent Ryder Cup records.

Re: who will woosie pick?

hi all
my pick would be Jimenez and Clark as both ar good team players. if Clark cant play them i go for Mcginley as i think both Clark and Mcginley with be hard to beet at home and also Jimenez has been really good this year and he would be a strong partner to play with, Jimenez and Garcia would be a great partenship as thay have played together before. i think it it had not been in ireland the Bjorn would of been a picked but think Mcginley will be picked before him.

Re: who will woosie pick?

I can't see Clarke wanting to play so I think the picks will be Westwood and Poulter. Mcginley is still on the points list in 10th spot.

Re: who will woosie pick?

McGinley is still in, but if he did drop out of the list I don't think I'd have him as a wild card... He has not played well for the past few months at all and is only on the list based on good results a long time ago.

Poulter, Westwood, Bjorn, Jiminez are all big players who are argueable in better form than Paul at the moment...

Being an irishman I hope McGinley stays in the top 10 and I'd have Clarke and Westwood as the wildcards...

Re: who will woosie pick?

If it were me I would give Clarke the option and I believe he said he would play if picked I would then go with Pettersson or Westwood.

I just see Pettersson playing better right now but Westwood has shown that he can handle Ryder Cup pressure but It does appear that Woosnam has more options then Lehman for Captain picks.

Re: who will woosie pick?

There are some interesting aspects of the captains picks.

Certainly, having Darren Clarke on the team is taking a huge chance on things.
- It is only weeks since the sad passing of his wife, and nobody could blame him for being affected by that.
- He's been away from tournament play for a while, and will only manage one tournament before the Ryder Cup.
- Several players outrank him. Paul Broadhurst and Johan Edfors both outrank Clarke on BOTH the rankings in play (World points and European points lists), and swedish/american Carl Pettersson has almost double the winnings per tournament played compared to Clarke on the PGA tour.

Westwood too is outranked by many other players, but
- Has 4 Ryder Cup caps.
- Has won twice at the K club.

I must confess ... I'm worried about Clarke. Not about his skill-level and abilities. I'm worried if he's really ready, and if his situation can end up landing him the role as scapegoat.

If he loses his first fourball, everybody will begin to question if he's ready, and that will put a LOT of ADDED pressure on his shoulders.
Lose the evening foursomes and the press will be screaming for him to be benched on saturday.
Lose the sunday singles, and see Europe lose the cup by 1 point ... and it'll be "all his fault".

I just don't think it's a huge risk for Clarke, himself, and for the european side.

Anyway ... we now know the players of the European Ryder Cup Team.

They are (in order of qualification):

Luke Donald
Sergio Garcia
Henrik Stenson
David Howell
Colin Montgomerie
Robert Karlsson
Paul Casey
Padraig Harrington
Paul McGinley
Jose Maria Olazabal
Darren Clarke (wild card)
Lee Westwood (wild card)

They will face the US team of

Tiger Woods
Phil Mickelson
Jim Furyk
Chad Campbell
David Toms
Chris DiMarco
Vaughn Taylor
J.J. Henry
Zach Johnson
Brett Wetterich
Scott Verplank (wild card)
Stewart Cink (wild card)

Re: who will woosie pick?

hi
if you remember a few years ago monty went into the ryder cup very depressed after his family problems, he came out a true leader and was one of the best displays of any ryder cup player i have ever seen, after monty did not join then in the celebrations as he was so wore out, lets hope darren clark can follow monty and do likewise. i think he will be so up for the game and darren is a big game player.
