Ignorant, or just plain stupid?

Hi All,

I have been playing golf for quite a few years now and have witnessed some strange things, but today took the biscuit. At my club, todays comp was an unusual two man scramble out in pairs of two. Just before we went to the 1st hole, a short par 3, a guy asked us if we were short two. We said no and thought no more of it. When we went to the tee box we could not believe our eyes. There on the first green were SIX guys. my buddy went to the pro shop and the assistant went and told them to come off the course. When he went away, they marched onto the second tee box and carried on. We called at them to stop but they had no intention of doing so. After this, they lost a ball on the next and every one of them decided to have a look. When we told them they were out of order, the reply was "we have 5 minutes to look for the ball" Honestly all I could do was laugh

hi rob
they are both, but its happening everywhere.
all cards i have seen say "avoid slow play at all times" yet people amble up the fairway as if theyve got all day to take their 9 shots on a par 4 hole.
not sure how they get on course in summer wearing their football kits and trainers, they always wait for the green to clear even though the green is unreachable and when youask them can you play through and they look at you like you got 2 heads!
no class!

Re: Ignorant, or just plain stupid?

Ok maybe they are wrong to do all this but everyone complains how they dont get to golf enough and how they are stuck in work and golf helps them relax and get away from the stressful life, so why not have some patience? Relax! Is it me or are British very in-patient and expect everything now? I am the same admittedly but im not the one complaining how I want to play golf more but I have work and then when I get a chance to play I complain because of slow play and I want to go back home! (because im still a teenager and dont work yet lol).

i played 18 holes today that took 5.3/4 hours

Re: Ignorant, or just plain stupid?

I play alot of different courses here in the USA, and 4-1/2-5 hour rounds are common place. It's all about the $$$$s and the more golfers they can put on a course at any given time generates more revenue for the course operators, and keeps the green fees lower for the rest of us. Just this morning there were 13 carts stacked up on the first tee box waiting to get out. My buddy and I saw this and rescheduled our tee time for later in the day. Good thing it is NFL Sunday. GJS

Re: Ignorant, or just plain stupid?

Guys,

Just to fill you in a bit more, it is common courtesy here in Ireland to accept that the format on a competition day is the same for every club member. Therefore if it is singles, we all go out in threes, if it is scramble or otherwise we go out in fours. This allows for a good flow through the course by all players and eliminates queues on the course.

Re: Ignorant, or just plain stupid?

lHi Robert,

I am a memeber of a private course, on comp day we have a strict rules of three only unless it's a four ball scramble etc but all medals are strictly two's or three's. Even when playing a casual round there would not be a 6 ball out ever they would be confronted or banned.

I know this sort of thing happens on Municiples where they have to many golfers on for £££££££££ and there is always a large share of begginers with no etiquite.

Maybe you should think about investing in a private course, once you pay your membership the annual fees are less than £10.00 per week if you average twice weekly, most clubs allow payment by instalments now too if anyone doesn't wish to pay up front.

You may enjoy your golf more.......!!

Ian.

Re: Ignorant, or just plain stupid?

hi
i remember playing st andrews and my friends and i turned up and there was about 50 people waiting to tee off, you can imaging what we were thinking as we had a tee off time, but the starter started us 4 minuets later than our start time, we only got held up twice and never longer than 5 minuets, the seen to have more people through that course them most other and i know the do a wonderfull job of controling the times, it was a great day for the 4 of us and think st andrews understand couse management and put lots of people on the course but keep a relistic time between every one.
i'm sure the starter told us 40.000 play that course a year.

Re: Ignorant, or just plain stupid?

Rob,

Although it may seem an outdated attitude to many these days, I still hold a number of core principles in life relating to how I behave in front of others and maintaining standards.

I have seen the great demise in standards of dress and behaviour on golf courses over recent years in line with similar standards in general society. I have no prejudice in relation to the opening up of golf to the wider community but unfortunately this Pikey underclass that respects nothing or anyone cannot be controlled in our liberal society and know it.

As Ian suggests, unfortunately the only escape is to join a members club that is selective of who they take as members and do not have cheap pay and play options.

Re: Ignorant, or just plain stupid?

hi brian
i think there is a ballance between the two. now all us want to be a member and play in weekly or monthly medals, some of us only want to play a couple of rounds of golf a month and beat the course, last few years i stoped playing weekends to spend more time with my family so i only play mondays and tuesdays. i am lucky as course tend to be not as busy then, so i now have a week day membership as i never play weekends now.
not all us can play weekends or like me want too.

Hi Bill,

I see you are a member of the Musselburgh club, I believe this is a good club with green fees around £30 / £50, I imagine you don't get many problems at these prices.

Re: Ignorant, or just plain stupid?

hi brian
its a realy good run club and the other 3 clubs i play in east lothian are too, gets busy on a sunday and you do have hold ups then but rest of week it tends to be ok. i have 3 friends i play with every week, one week its musselburgh then next haddinton, then dunbar and last castle park that about 15 miles inland. i often play the old couse in musselburgh, 300 years old and £10 a round. also gullane and longniddry. i am lucky having so many real good courses within a few miles of me and there are dozens in and around edinburgh. have played every course in eastlothian at least once, the green at muirfild are the hardest i have ever putted, so many humps and bumps that you dont see on the tv at the open.
east lothian is a great place if like me you love links golf. the greens and fairways and bunkers are so diffrent from inland courses.
