Question What clubs to buy to many choices

For christmas Im getting new clubs fitted from top to bottom Now the problem is everyone "Is The Best" so they want you to believe. but who is? Ive been looking around and noticed alot of Pros use different brands in there bags Taylormade Driver Cleveland wedges Ping Putter etc Is that because the like those or they are getting a nice check from them. Now that its getting close and Im planning to play some mini tours I want good equipment.

Re: What clubs to buy to many choices

hi ttime
pros do get paid a lot to use the top brands of club and i dont think there is one brand that stands out better than any other, the main 4/5 brands are all good and if fitted will serve you well for many years, with wedges its down to feel, some feel heavy and have less feel but great at full shots some light in the hands and great for the touch player round the greens,
putters are the same, it about how they feel, think pros change there putter more than any club. ping use to be the best by far with there range of putter but other have started to catch them up in the last few years,
drivers again its about how it feels and picking the right shaft to match your swing, you could have the same head with 10 diffrent shafts and hit all of them so diffrent, fade some and draw others, hit high and hit low, with driver the shaft is really important.
one last thing, try a broomhandled putter, i have one and my game changed so much. i was never a good putter till i got one, so i would urge you to try one in the shop.
hope that helps a little
bill

Re: What clubs to buy to many choices

The main thing to do is try everything in your price range at the pro shop.

Whatever you feel most confident with at address and in your swing should be the best.

I tried the Ping G5's, Cobra 3100s, Callaway X18s, Wilson Di6s, and I already had some MX17s before I settled on the Cobra 3400 irons with a 20* Cobra baffler (replaces 2/3 iron).

As for Woods/Drivers I'm very happy with my Cobra F Speed 10.5* driver, and I switch between my Callaway Fairway woods (3+5) and Cobra ones, depending on which course I'm playing.

My putter is a Ping G2i Piper, which I feel extremely confident with. It's the club I've had the longest and I'm never going to change it for anything.

This is the only input I can give really... my experience. However, you should always go for what feels best for you... No point getting the same irons as me on my recommendation if you are not 100% happy with them. You need to have confidence in your kit, so I feel the need to stress again, it's not about brand names, it's about what feels good for you!

Hope this helps.

Re: What clubs to buy to many choices

TTime,

Pros are generally paid to use their clubs. Why do you think Tiger plays Nike gear? Because he's paid to. Just like Phil with Callaway.

I prefer the component route, myself - all the playability of the 'big brand' stuff, without the big price tag. It frees up more money for stuff like custom fitting.

Honestly, whatever you get will be fine as long as it's done by a qualified fitter. BTW, the 20-ish year old at Golf Galaxy isn't qualified.

Try proclubmakers.org, use their locator, and get someone who's certified to do your fitting.

I say it too often: If it's golf club shaped, you can play with it.

Re: What clubs to buy to many choices

I'm sure your fitter will work with you once you've had a few weeks to get used to your new clubs. Most fitters do lie adjustments for a period of time after selling clubs at no charge to get them dialled in.
