Question square drivers.

Any thoughts on new Callaway and Nike " square" drivers ? Innovative or just another marketing ploy ?

Re: square drivers.

To quote Ecclesiastes: "There is nothing new under the sun".

This has been done before. The tech is for real. The look is horrible. However, do you want performance or beauty? These clubs make you pick.

John from clubmaker-online.com is getting some in, in a component form. Maybe I'll try one that way. Hell, if it cures my slice, I'll take it!

Re: square drivers.

I'm with Lowpost42, if it improves my game, it's in the bag!

If they truly work, they will be popular. If they don't work, then they won't be very popular.

I've heard there have been a few pros that really like them and are expected to use them on tour. Anyone heard any different?

I've seen the callaway fusion and nike versions, any others out there?

I can't wait to test these out. As anyone knows, if your mental game improves with something, then put it in your bag. If this different look aids in your mental game, then you have another advantage.

Re: square drivers.

I have been reading about these in Today's golfer and love the sound of them can't wait for next months issue and they will have the data tests on them. The only thing that puts me off is their price tag at nearly £400 for them I just can't justify it as you can pick up a R7 taylor made for £200 now that these have come on the market. I also think that for the average golfer they will not see much advantage unless their drives are like a pro.

Cheers
Mark

The little I read, seems to indicate to me that the average golfer would benefit more. I was the understanding that the purpose of the square driver was to help the mishits go farther. (shots out on the toe heal etc.)Not like a pro needs too much help with that.

Hi Bob
You are right it would help average golfers with good swings but for the average golfer with a bad swing then it probably wont help them.
I have read it makes shots more straighter but you still have to hit the sweet spot, but its the increase in sweet spot area that will not twist on impact or in tech terms MOI that gives you a more straighter shot.

However if you have problems with your swing this driver probably wont be of much use and you may need to have a driver which suits your swing ie if your a bad slicer you may need a draw driver
Cheers
Mark

Smile Re: square drivers.

At £400 a throw I think I will wait for the clones and copies to hit the market.

Re: square drivers.

hi
even the square driver still have a very small sweetspot, its the area around the sweet spot that is more forgiving, a bit like cavity back irons, the sweet spot can't be made bigger as it the point where the x-y points meet, ie a "+" in the middle off the face. what is done the area around the sweet spot is made so it dont add as much side spin when miss hit like the older clubs did, but you will still lose distance if not hit right on the sweet spot.
