Yipp, yipp not hooray!

I was playing yesterday and all of a sudden out of nowhere I have started twitching my hands when I putt. Its not as bad on long putts but the short ones are horendous, anything from inside about 10 feet. I usually use right hand below left and never had a problem, I had to try left hand below right as an emergency measure and it improved things massively, my putts where more positive. Am I right in thinking I have a case of the yipps, I thought only older players got it and im only 33. Any help would be most gratefully received. I dont think im ready just yet for a broomhandle putter!

Re: For the love of god somedody please help me!

You might give this a try. Since I cannot see your putting stroke, or what you are thinking about, this is strickly a guess on my part.

If by chance you are focusing on the face of your putter during your putting stroke, forget about the face of the putter. Instead try focusing just on speed, and direction of the palm of your dominant hand.

Another thing I do to avoid the issue you discribe, (I some times get to handsy) is that I never focus on all the various mechanics often discribed for the putting stroke. Instead, when my putting goes bad on me, I use the drill above, and also focus on getting my shoulders a little more involved in my putting stroke.

May not work for your issue, but give it a try. It might help. GJS

Think about some things you did differently before you played that day. Do you drink coffee? Did you stop that day? If you do not, and you had some, this can be the cause. And not just coffee, but soda can have the twitchies. Look at sugar too, Holloween candy running around the house, it's easy to grab a few and not think twice.

The basics in the stroke are as you saw, hands staying still, is essential. The adjustment to go left-hand-low was brilliant! Remove the twitch (whatever the reason) and you can probably go back to the r-h-l grip...unless you like the l-h-l now?

Yipp, yipp not hooray!!

I didnt do anything different from what I usually do, I had played on the Monday and towards the end of the round my putting started to deteriate so perhaps it was playing on my mind. Interestingly enough I thought by firming up my grip I could sort the problem but going by what you guys have said I was probably making it worse. I also tried to concentrate on a good rocking of the shoulders, making sure everything moved together back and through, it was fine on a practice stroke but as soon as the ball was there it all went to pieces. Perhaps it is a mental thing, putting has never been my strongest suit but on my day I wouldnt say it was bad. I must admit I am seriously considering left below right, it just seemed a more positive stroke whereas before i left a few short. Do you guys have any views on the extra wide grips, the ones where you place both thumbs on the top?

Re: For the love of god somedody please help me!

I use an oversize square grip which helps me to keep my hands , and putter face perpendicular to my chosen target line. I also have both my thumbs on top of my grip per your question in your last post. My putter head is also on the heavy side at 600 grams, which I am sure helps with the extra weight of the oversized grip.

On another note. Although I think it is not legal, I put this same type of square oversized grip on one of my drivers. I was just horsing around in my grand son's garage when I did this. When I took it the range I was surprised how well the driver worked for me. Yes, I did have to add weight to the club head to balance it out to get a good feel. Just tinkering around. GJS

I use the Odyssey 2 ball steel which is fairly weighty, perhaps I will see if my pro shop has a large grip and try it out. I have to say Im not too sure about putting it on any other clubs, I have 3 layers of tape on my grips anyway because I have quite large hands. Doesnt it affect your normal grip on a driver GJS.

Re: For the love of god somedody please help me!

There are several medical issues that should be considered. 1) Low blood sugar - especially if accompanied by weakness and sweating - will usually improve with some form of sugar 2) abnormal thyroid - particularly hyperactive thyroid but would think this would happen off the course also and 3) familial tremor - an intentional tremor that is inherited but I think you would notice this at other times. these usually respond well to a low dose betablocker.

Anyway, it may just be a case of the nerves, but you might want to consider having the above checked out by an internist if it doesn't go away. Mike.

As I understand it, a putting grip is not allowed to be used on any other club. This is what I have been told in the past anyways. I did not mean to imply that this grip on a driver made the driver perform better than my normal driver, and yes I could not use my normal driver (hands) grip. I had to use my normal putting grip. When I used the driver with the putting grip on it, it just felt better swinging it than I thought it would. Like I said, I was just tinkering around. GJS
