Wrong Clubs?

I Am A Beginner (six Months) And In My First Lesson The Pro Told Me That My Clubs Were Four Degrees Flat!! I Bought Them Used From A Shop Before Getting Them Measured Or Anything. I Feel As Though At Address I Have To Stand The Club Straight Up At Address. As A Beginner Without A Repeatable Swing Is It Better To Go With Standard Clubs New Until I Play The Game More And Have A Repeatable Swing?

Re: Wrong Clubs?

I would suggest that as a beginner you don't need anything working against you. now you have been told the clubs don't fit you it will be on your mind.

4 deg is quite a lot, if you hold the leading edges of two 7 irons together with 1 deg lie difference, they will be approximately the width of the grip apart at the top, you can imagine the difference with 4 deg.

If the flex and length are OK you could get them bent to the correct lie for a reasonable price.

Re: Wrong Clubs?

I guess it depends upon a couple factors, 1) how much are you planning to spend, if your looking at a big name off the rack it is not going to be that much more to have them fitted. 2) At this point the pro would fit them to your height and body shape (arms from the floor). So if your above/below average hieght I would definately look into having them custom fit, that way you can take the classic golf stance and not have to make adjustments wether with the club or your body.

Re: Wrong Clubs?

A few things to check:
How are your clubs relative to standard. Are they four degrees flat from standard or are they four degrees flat for you. Are the lengths standard?

Based on your statements about having to stand the club almost "straight up" at address, are you sure they’re too flat, and not too upright?

Is your "pro" a real pro and does he know what he’s talking about. No offense to your pro, but some people (again, not necessarily you) will call just about anybody who gives golf lessens a "pro". Many are not qualified to fit equipment, much less teach golf.

My personal opinion is to learn with a set of clubs that are approximately fitted for your body type and dimensions, not necessarily fitted for your swing, which is likely not very technically correct at this point, and also a work in progress. After you learn how to make a proper golf swing, and do it consistently, then you can get your fit fine tuned.
