Help! What should I have in my bag?

Here is what I own.

Callaway 454 Ti Driver

Callaway Big Bertha 2004 Irons 4-10. 10 is 45 degrees with 7 degrees of bounce.

Callaway Big Bertha 2004 50 degree gap wedge with 7 degrees of bounce.

56 degree Pinemeadow Sand Wedge with 15 degrees bounce.

I have 3i, 4i and 5i Pinemeadow hybrids. (Callaway Heavenwood Knockoffs)

I was thinking I need a 3 wood, or 5 wood. But not sure how far I'd hit these clubs. I have a huge gap between my Driver and my 3 hybrid. I hit my 3 hybrid about 190, and my inconsistant driver about 250-280.

I also think I need a go to wedge around the greens. Maybe a Vokey or something. My sand wedge has like 15 degrees of bounce which is impossible to hit on a tight lie. The next lowest lofted club is my 50 degree gap wedge with 7 degrees of loft.

Do I need a higher lofted wedge with less bounce for tight lies where loft is needed?

Should I get a 3 wood or 4 wood?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for any help!

I suggest a LW - something within a degree of 60, but follows your loft progression. And low bounce - 6 degrees or less.

Thanks for the response! I was leaning towards not getting a lob wedge because I've heard they're really hard to hit. But I'll still consider it.

They're no harder to hit than any of your other clubs. There's marginally less margin for error in a fluffy lie (as, due to the loft, the club is slightly more likely to slide completely under the ball), but my 60 is my go to club around missed greens.

Re: Help! What should I have in my bag?

A lot depends on the course you play and how often you use each club.

But I would lean towards getting a 3 wood or 4 wood, a 3 wood should (given your other distances) get you about 220-230 it is also a nice option off the tee. A 5 wood would be maybe 10 yds longer then a normal 3i, so I am not sure it would do a lot for your yardage gaps and it would force you to drop others clubs.

Re: Help! What should I have in my bag?

I carry a Driver,3/5/7 woods, 5 to 9 irons, PW, GW,SW and LW. These give me a very good range of playing options.

The 4 wedges allow me to approach from 100 yds in with a great number of distance and ball flight options.

The irons cover all I need from 165 - 120 yd ranges.

The fairway woods are versatile and easy to use verses long irons, the 3 wood is a better option than the driver on many tight fairways or where some ball shaping is needed off the tee. I do keep a 19 deg and 22 deg recovery wood in the car and exchange them for the 3 and 5 woods on windy days, or again if playing a tight course with a lot of hazards.

Ultimately though it is a matter of learning what suits your game and where you play.

Re: Help! What should I have in my bag?

I would suggest another wood. In your case probably a 3 wood to have another driving club. You could go to 5 wood if you want more control. A lob wedge is nice but not as necessary in my opinion since you already have a 56 degree wedge. You could get rid of the 5i hybrid and get a lob wedge and 3/5 wood because the 4 iron should cover the 5i distance.

By the way is my math wrong or do you already have 14 clubs in the bag counting the putter? You're only allowed 14 clubs according to PGA rules. Of course a lot of casual golfers don't pay attention to that rule but for your information....

Looking at your wedge situation, I would definately add a 58 or 60deg low bounce wedge for tight lies around the green.
It will also double as an excellent choice for bunker shots if the sand is heavy or wet.

There must be some irregular gaps between your irons and wedges as it is. Getting a few of the irons bent to even out gaps might make it possible to ditch one of your existing irons (propably 10 or Gap ... or both in exchange for a single Pitching Wedge). This could make room for the Lob.

Regarding the woods, again focus on evening out your gaps rather than for hitting a certain distance mark.
An possible "alternative" strategy - considering your reference to incosistent drives - could be to add a strong 3 (say 13 deg) and a 5 wood (21deg), and ditch the driver along with one of the longer irons or shorter hybrids - propably the 4i to allow for the ease of use of the hybrids - but with focus on even gaps.

You'll find the strong 3 a much easier club than the driver, since it is shorter in the shaft and have more loft. A good hit of a 13deg 3wood will most often go further than a poorly hit drive. I regularly hit my strong 3 in the 240-250 yard range, and I'm not really a big hitter.

Re: Help! What should I have in my bag?

You seem to have quite a few hybrids between 4i and D but still compain on major gap between D and least lofted hybrid. Either your 4i and one of the hybrids are too close to each other or difference in distance between your hybrids is minimal. I would suggest you tweak lofts of hybrids or replace the faulty one
In case you feel you cannot hit 60 degree wedge properly perhaps you should focus more on your swing rather than what is in your bag.

Re: Help! What should I have in my bag?

I'm going to stop carrying my 5 hybrid for sure. And either keep my 4 hybrid and ditch my 4 iron, or vice versa. That would give me 12 clubs, leaving me 2 spots for a wedge and a 3 wood.
