Do Golfers Lie Or Exaggerate?

As A Beginner I Have Found Many Golfers To Claim They Can Do Certain Things That Is Different When They Get On The Course. One Guy Claimed He Could Hit A 250 Yard Six Iron And Another Said His Swing Speed Was 180 Mph!! If Im Not Mistaken I Dont Think The Long Drive Guys Even Swing This Fast!! Another Claimed He Shot In The Lower Eighties But He Took Multiple Shots Off The Tee If His First Was Bad And He Did Not Count The Strokes!! And What About The 300 Yard Bombs That Actually Is Only 250-260. I Have Learned To Not Believe Everyhting Until I See It On The Course.

golfers are people, some people lie, some people dont. Some golfers do, some dont. Some of the golfers on here who say they hit it long, some do, some dont. if they do that is their problem, I used to worry about this a lot but all it did was frustrate me. I finally figured out for the most part it was pointless to worry about what I could not control.

A club member I played with a few times went to the range with the club pro to get something or other fixed. He was using the driver and sending balls to the 200 yard marker. Not very straight but about all the same distance nonetheless. A little later during the day we met on the first tee and played a round together. His wife had joined us at this point. During this round, he bragged to his wife that during his practice session or lesson earlier he sent ball after ball to the net at the end of the range.

The net at the range is 250 yards away. He did not send one ball to the net. I did not mention this fact when he looked at me when he bragged to his wife, I simply said "yeah, he did". I figured he just wanted to get some tonight. I did not even mention it to him later.

We lie all the time for all kinds of reasons.


p.s. Capital letters are used to begin a sentence or to begin a name or to begin each word in a title but not to begin each word in a complete text. It took me three tries to read your text completely before I got used to it and ultimately to read the content of the text itself. Normally I read text once and understand the content immediately. Later on I'll disregard your posts entirely just because it takes too much effort to read them. Dont you find it easy to read the text I wrote?

I'm not 100% sure that distances are lies more than they are mininformation fuelled.

How many times have we hit a drive, then gone 'well, it's a 400 yard hole, I'm 100 yards out, so I must have hit it 300 yards!'?

But then we fail to take into consideration elevation changes, roll, or doglegs. The slightest of doglegs will add magic yards to every shot (or rob them, depending on where you are in the leg).

Buying a GPS golf device has helped me to truly know my distances - both off the tee and into greens.

which gps device have you got?

At the time, it was either a skyCaddie or an iGolf.

I went with the iGolf for 2 reasons:
1) No annual membership fee
2) 11 mappable points (8 custom) vs 8 point (5 mappable)

As well, there's a free dump site out there for iGolf users (an underground thing).

I love mine. Granted, that skyCaddie Intelligreen feature looks pretty sweet!

I played in an open scratch cup last summer and got paired with a guy I had never met. He had all the gear: Callaway driver and irons, new electric caddy, new shoes etc, and the most expensive pants and t/shirt. All this and a story of 6 handicap. Being a stroke comp he proceeded to play his first drive ob. He ran ahead of me and magically found the ball. I am not joking he must have done this 5 or 6 times. Also he had a nasty habit of placing the ball on the green a few inches closer than where it had landed. When we finished he had the nerve to ask me to sign for a terrific 79 gross. I told him I could not possibly do this as I felt he didnt adhere to the rules of golf. He had the audacity to ask me did I think he was cheating!! Why do people do this kind of thing?

It is not the liars, or those who exagerate about their games that is a problem. A good, honest player will always score lower than those types of golfers. Those golfers have ego problems, and most likely won't ever become a low double, or single digit player. Their poor games are their punishment. The golfers I can't stand are those sandbagging, cheating club players. Those are the worst people to be around. Even worse are the people who run these local players clubs' tournaments, know about these cheaters, and then still allows the cheating to continually take place. GJS

imagine playing with a player who constantly scrubs strokes from his score, improves his ball lie without penalty and will pull you up the minute you make an absentminded call on your score.
all these things inevitably lead to him winning our weekly 3 ball.
so imagine my surprise when playing yesterday on a crowded course and in wet conditions he announces he probably wont finish his round in time to make a prior appointment and walks off the course.
