I dont know if this has been posted before.

Do you think Tiger will catch him,with all the keen Competition now days?.
If not why,whats against him,is he at his peak??.

Tiger has to play poorly for anyone else to be competitive with him. Or, they have to play well above their own heads for four straight days. He will surpass Nicklaus's major record within the next 2-4 years. Just a guess on my part, but I would not be suprised if he has 25+ majors by the time he is 50.

Only things in his way are personal decisions, family matters, and/or an injury.

Junkie, I do agree with you on most of what you say about the majors but maybe tiger will be the one to put the record out of reach for no one to get. Cal ripkens consecutive games played streak, 51 hit game streak, those are two records that may never be broken. Tiger may make another record that is unbreakable, but then again maybe he wont. Someone has to be the greatest of all time, tiger just might be it, but then again maybe you are right

Keen competition? What?

When the 1000th ranked player is closer to the world #2 than the world #2 is to the world #1, that says something.

Sure, barring injury or a Bobby Jones-esque quitting golf early, I have no reason to believe that Tiger shouldn't do to golf what Wayne Gretzky did to hockey.

Well maybe the keen competition bit,was wishful thinking on my part.I am abit biased, I grew up in the Nicklaus era and remembered when he came on to the scene alot of Palmer's fans resented Nicklaus.
Now its the same, alot of the old Nicklaus fans will be hoping Tiger falters.

"When we see men like Nicklaus play shots like these,we are always delighted and given wonder where they come from.Don't bother to ask they don't know either.
They will shrug and say,as Player did"I wish I knew".

I am not a follower of Tiger Woods, but he does play best golf by far, right now. I admire him for that. I remember the years of Palmer, Nicklaus, Player, Trevino, and the fine golfers that followed, and those who preceeded them. Lots of competition among those great players. I have convinced myself that todays field of competition for Tiger is not as strong as Nicklaus had to play against. I also hope Tiger does not break Mr. Nelson's consective win record. GJS

I don't think that tiger will make the record... The competition is higher now, they are changing all the old courses to handicap the players more... The population of golfers has to be 10 fold higher today than back then. if tiger does beat the record it will be an amazing feat indeed. In some respects, you can't compare the two players because of the environment that they each had to contend with.

I think the difficulty is in that Tiger is so far above and beyond the rest of the field. Jack had serious competition. I forget the number (I think it's 19) 2nd place finishes to go along with his wins - that's pretty spectacular. Don't get me wrong, most people don't bother with a stat like 2nd place finishes - but to figure that Jack was that close to winning 19 times? Dats purty good.

However, Tiger is back to being in a place where he doesn't get beat - he loses.

It's like if I, as a 23 handicap were to play a 5 handicap and win the match - would I have won the match, or would the 5 have lost it? I daresay the latter had happened.

For the record, I'm a club doctor, not a swing doctor.

if you also think of who he lost too as well. palmer, player, trevino, watson,floyd, balesterios, irwin, norman, faldo. all were playing some great golf at the same time as jack and all were wining week in and out.
i do think woods is so much ahead of every one now and only he can stop himself from betting jacks total.
i think in jack time the top played were much closer in abillity and it was jacks course managment that often beat the others as there golf was so closely mached.
also the equipment and balls have changed so much now and playes are longer of the tee now, garry player said last week at the age of 73 he hits his drives 50 yards longer than when he was in in 30s and thats down to the equipment.
woods now against nicklaus at his best using the same equipment ?
i dont know who would be better would be good if they could use a computer to find out like they do at chess when they play kapoff against the old pros of the 1900.

As it is in "most" sports, I do belive it is a "flight of fancy" to attempt to compare the games champions from different eras.

Besides all the advancements in technology/equipment and personal fitness levels etc etc, I also know we sports nuts just LOVE to have the conversations around the water cooler on a Monday morning about how good so and so is and whether or not they would have beaten so and so in a match and so long as that remains the basis of comparison, I personally see no real harm...

However, that said, records are made to be broken and I feel that there is no doubt that Tiger will go on and better Jack's remarkbale record, however, if and when he does, I am willing to wager he will be most gracious in his acknowledgements and do what he can to shift focus to where he probably feels it belongs, anywhere but on him....

So long as the rest of us remember that just because someone new has come along and surpassed a long standing record, this in no way whatsoever diminishes the quality or character or achievements of the previous record holder...

Without a past we have no future......

Byron, Sam, Arnold and Jack and their peers are the reason Tiger plays. Just as Tiger himself will be the reason that the future prodigy will have taken up the game....

you make a very good point scragger and tiger is in the same mold as all the great pros, his love of the game and its history and the great playes that have made it what it is now.
tiger is keeping up the high standards thay have set in the past.

Isac Newton said "If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." I think this is true of Tiger as well.

They say he will achieve 19 majors at the 2012 Open or somesuch if he keeps his strike rate up. 12 majors in 10 years is 1.2 a year and he needs 7 more which is about 5 years worth. Mickelson has kind of ground to a halt again, Els is finished, I think, as far as majors are concerned as is Singh, who will probably have another 3 years realistically. Lets not forget Tiger is a good bit younger that almost anyone else who has a Major above the fire, (apart from Ben Curtis and Geoff Ogilvy, I think, cant remember if Micheel is younger than Tiger) and those guys only have 1 each.

I think he will do it, records were meant to be broken after all.

I do like how when people talk about Mr Nicklaus' Major haul they only started including his 2 US amateurs when Tiger appeared and it seemed he was going to have a realistic tilt at the record. Mr Nicklaus himself started doing it too, strangely poor form for him.....

But think on this.......

TIGERS GOOD, BUT HE AINT SEVE...........
