Longer Clubs

Hi

I have been playing golf for several years and, only recently, have deceided to start getting good.

I am 6'6 tall and up till now have been using regular length clubs.

I went to a store and saw the Ping range, I got provisionally fitted, he said I need 1' longer shafts because of my height and because I have a high swing speed (100) I need stiff to extra stiff shafts.

I have noticed that I hit all my irons on a very high trajectory, which he said was a result of too much flex in the shafts. I still belt the ball a long way (4iron ~200yds, Dr 280-300)

All my clubs have regular flex, and hence it is not going to be cheap to create this new uber-set.

So my quesiton is, is it really worth $1000???

I usually drive pretty straight, but they have a tendancy to pull left sometimes. I borrowed a T MADE R510 with ex stiff shaft and nailed them stright all day.......is this just a more forgiving club though???

Fitted clubs will always be better for your game. The questions is: Are you dedicated to the game enough to spend that type of money on a set of golf clubs? If you golf regularily and can afford spending $1,000 on clubs, by all means get fitted clubs. Otherwise, think it over long and hard. It may not be worth the investment if golfing isn't that important or if the money is needed to buy groceries.

If you like the clubs you have and just want them to fit, have an extention put on each club and get a new shaft for your woods. The adjustment to the irons would be about $10 a club including new grips. A good Penley ETA or similar is $70 for the shaft and $20.00 to install. Your looking about $200. to fit your present clubs to your height.

I just had my 3 Reid Lockhart wedges regrooved, swingweighted to D5 and new grips $50.00 for everything. These are stainless steel wedges. I think it 32.00 for chrome.


Technology in some cases makes a difference, but the latest greatest isn't always the answer. I carry a persimmon 5 wood, steel shaft, Burke PGA model. I hit it about 205 - 215 consisently. I play it instead of a metal 5 wood. People freak out when they see it. I just like the way it feels.

I just had my driver reshafted from a regular to a stiff to lower the trajectory bit. (Medium kick point to high kick point) Total price 95.00. Hits like a new club.

Find out from a country club who has does their club repair. Most city's have a few. Get someone with a good reputation. Golf Club makers are like mechanics some know more than others.

If your heart is set on some new sticks, Ebay has good deals on New clubs. I got a set of NEW Hogan Irons for under $300.00.

The reason I considered new clubs was because my old ones are not great, and so spending 200 on shafts is the same as buying a new set.

With the drivers I can get the same drivers on EBay for less that the cost of a new shaft so I think I will do that!

I dont feel bad when using my current clubs, its just that it looks like I am using kids clubs and I am sure there is a more nautral swing for me with longer clubs, rather than contorting to get the face to lie flat. I have to come around the ball a lot and so loose some power.

I missed the exact Ping clubs I was fitted for, I went home after the fitting and there they were for 349 on ebay(699 new!!), I ummed and aahhhed and then they had gone! Doh! Will have to wait and see if more re-appear!

Was just in my local golf store, could not resist new V Steel...

Anyway, they informed me that manufacturers will make the club any way you want, so if you want RAC irons with +1" with extra 3* of lie, they will do it at no cost.

I did not know this. I put this here in case someone reads the thread in the future.

I think this is the way I will go, that way I dont have to shell out 700+ on new Pings, but a more reasonable amount. (unless I win the auction on ebay.....)
