Driver Information

Hello,
I will be purchasing a new golf driver soon and I would like to know your opinions on which ones are good or bad. I know there are several name brands with several models, they are probable all good. But I am just interested in hearing what you guys have and maybe some pros and cons. I am probable going to pay about $150, so either a used newer model on Ebay, or a new hold-over (maybe a year or two old.)

Ones I have considered:

Adams Redline RPM (non-adjustable weight model, dual, and quad)
Cleveland Ti 460
Cleveland Hibore (not the XL, too expensive)
Taylormade r5 Dual
Cobra F Speed
Nike Sasquatch
Nike Ignite 460
Dunlop Loco Pro

I know there are many choices here, but I would like to narrow it down.
I have only golfed 2 seasons, I score maybe 100, with my last driver I averaged maybe 225-250 on a good day, I have had a slice problem.
-thanks

Re: Driver Information

I can't comment on most of those, but I can tell you that I hated the TaylorMade R5. I think it was the shaft that I didn't like (factory MAS2 shaft) but I just sold it and stuck with my old Burner. Plan on likely having to replace the shaft on the r5 if you go with that, although I have seen some on Ebay with Graffaloy shafts.

Re: Driver Information

Forget the R5, get yourself an R7 425 or 460.

The best on your list:

Nike Sasquatch (dont bother with the Ignite)
Cleveland Ti460

But get the right shaft, some of the standard fit shafts can be a bit poor.

Re: Driver Information

hi
you should also look at the ping g5 as it seems to work well with handicap player in the 10s to 20s and is also the top selling driver for the last 5 months
lots of them on e-bay too.

Re: Driver Information

Boy this thread should get heaps of opinions....

personally, I play a 580XD with a graffolloy pro launch shaft and really like it. My view on the R7's is that most people that buy them are trying to correct something in their swing. I would tend to think that the little weights are more marketing hype than worthwhile tinkering.

The Ping G5 hits very well. The Calloway ERC hits very well. I would stay away from the new square clubs as well---more marketing hype.

If you buy an older design and put a great aftermarket shaft and grip on it I think you will get more for your money.

go to a local driving range and try out some clubs...

Get the club professionally fitted for spin rate and launch angle---save money on the club and spend it on the course!

Re: Driver Information

Personally, I think you should play with what you can realistically afford.

Currently, I have a TM Bubble Burner reg shaft, 9° driver that I got from a bargain bin in a pro shop at some course somewhere for $20 about 5 years ago.

Up until very recently, I struggled to consistently hit the club and I had been thinking well documented thoughts about not hitting driver at all.

Then, someone on here said something that seemed to make some sense, I took that to the range and hit some drivers and crushed them all and now the stick is back in the bag for good. The 3W has also earned a reprieve from the shed and is back in the bag as well.

Over here you can pay upwards of $500 for a driver. Again, personally I can't see the value in that sort of purchase, especially when I have not even paid 2/3rds of that amount for all the other (12) clubs I carry in total.

All the club manufacturers will tell you their current driver will add yards and accuracy to your game. IMO that's twaddle (a technical term for garbage)

That said, I would dearly love to purchase a full set of the current Ping product, but realistically that is out of my financial reach just right now. Further it is arguable that the purchase would make me any better than I am right now anyways...

Bottom line, IMO do whatever you can afford and so long as it works for you, its all good...

Cheers

Re: Driver Information

For the same money, why not buy 2 SMT Spectrums both shafted with AccuFLEX Evolution shafts.

Re: Driver Information

Hello,
Thanks for all the advice. I actually just bought a driver on Ebay yesterday. Its an Adams Redline RPM 460 with an Aldila NV-65s Stiff Shaft. I really like Adams golf and I got this club for a steal.
Even though I bought one, I am still interested in hearing what you have, and your experiences with them. I like learing about clubs.
-thanks

Re: Driver Information

I have got an Adams Quad Redline. I think it is great as it was much cheaper than the others on your list.

Re: Driver Information

I am just about to purchase a Bang O Matic 460 with a Harrison Striper stiff shaft. I have played some time with a Ping G2 which is a great club. I am going to try the Bang as it has been used to break so many Long Driving records, is very good value for money and I have read some good articles on it's performance, Also I just fancy a change and this sounds like club that will make or break a drive.

Re: Driver Information

I'm currently playing an Integra Quadratic shafted with an Aggressive Frenzy XXXX. All new components for about $150 US (Long drive shafts are expensive).

It might cost you a few bucks more if you have to pay to get it assembled.

Re: Driver Information

I would take a long look at the HiBore.

I had the opportunity to demo it last season and it was just LONG. I was some 20-30 yards longer than my current Wilson Deep Red driver and quite a bit straighter too.

Hey Scraggs,

I will keep it close for a bit longer, lets see what the Bang does . P@P would probably be more than the G2 is worth now
