Do you have to use the putter on the green?

I have just finished reading the Rules of Golf and can find no ruling on this.

I was on a green which was about 30ft long and 20ft wide (a big green) and the flag was right at the top and I was just on the green at the furthest point from it.

I used a 6 iron and chip and ran the ball and got it in the hole. There was no damage to the green.

I know this is unusual but is it against the rules?

Cheers

Medic6666,

No it's not against the rules. I have chipped and pitched on a kidney shaped green over the rough in the c area. I've seen a few pros snap a putter in anger and use a different club to putt. with. Good shot!!!!

dont you remember a few years back either in an open or a ryder cup match at the old course at st andrews when olazabel was on one of those huge rolling greens and decided to get the wedge out and took a huge divot out of the beatiful green.totally legal and was a good shot, the only one not smiling was the greenkeeper.

Thanks guys. :)

I have read the R&A rules of golf and could'nt find anything saying you had to use a putter on the greens.

Its always nice to get confirmation. I do try not to damage the greens as I know how much work goes into them and a 6 iron chip and run does not need back-spin so should'nt really need a divot.

This was one of those rare occasions where I knew that this shot was better than my putting. :0)

Now to work out how the woods work. I have played for 4 months now and have not touched a wood. My 3 iron goes just as far as my brothers driver and is more accurate (he gets quite annoyed by that) :0).

Here to a long life and good golf...cheers. :0)
